Swish

Chapter 24

T he warm breeze kisses my skin as I look out at the calm, peaceful ocean. I slowly raise my right hand and scoop my hair behind my ear to keep it out of my face. I don’t want anything to obscure my view, not just of the ocean, but of my beach partner as well. I look to my left and my heart skips a beat, once again I can’t believe that of all the people he could have chosen to come here with, he chose me. I study his face. His expression giving away absolutely no hint of what he’s thinking or feeling. I’m like an open book. He’s like ancient hieroglyphs.

It’s so peaceful here right now, just the sound of the sea and our breathing, like meditating. Even with the rest of my class playing music and having a generally good time just feet away from us, it seems quiet. This might be the happiest I have ever been in my life. Definitely since my mom died. The thing is, I can’t remember much from that time so I can’t really compare, but it would have had to have been really happy to top this.

I notice Mike looking at me and lower my head to my feet embarrassed. Lost in my train of thought I have no idea how long he had been looking in my direction. I dig my feet into the warm sand, busying myself.

“Abby.”

I snap my head around as I hear my name – nothing but a whisper, as if the breeze itself had uttered it.

“Everything ok?” Mike asks.

“Fine,” I say. “I just thought I heard…” I trail off as I turn back in his direction. Just past him, where the rest of the class were just moments ago, now there’s nothing. Now there’s no one. The whole beach is empty and an eerie silence stretches for what seems to be miles. Even the waves crashing on the shore create no sound. It’s like I’m watching a silent movie. “Where is everyone?” I say, indicating to the empty beach.

“What do you mean?” Mike answers.

“Mia. Brad…everyone. Where did they go?” I ask again.

“Abigail, they’re there,” he answers, talking much slower than usual.

“Mike, look. There’s no one there. They’re all gone.”

“I don’t need to look, Abigail.”

I look back toward the silent sea. Waves crash against the huge rocks and still produce no sound whatsoever. “Something really weird is going on. Mike. I’m scared.”

“Don’t be scared, you know I’ll always protect you.” Mike, holds my hand as he says this, but it’s different. His hands feel like sandpaper and the electric pulse that courses through my body at every touch, isn’t there.

“Abby.”

I hear the whispered voice say my name once again. I turn in the direction it seems to come from. Just behind me. Once again, there’s no one there.

“What the hell is happening here?” I say.

I turn around and what greets me causes my stomach to lurch. It’s Mike, but it isn’t. His angelic face has contorted into some kind of demonic beast.
