Chapter 16

Whining woke Brooke. She pulled herself out of bed and checked the clock. It was past time to feed Rufus, and he was probably famished. It had taken her forever to fall asleep with the band digging into her ankle.

“Hold on!” As if the dog could understand her. She stumbled out of bed then pulled on a light bathrobe before heading down the stairs.

Rufus was running around in a big circle in the kitchen, stopping only to sniff his food bowl each time he passed it. He yapped when Brooke stepped near the pantry.

“It’s coming.” Bleary-eyed, she poured the food and water then looked outside. The sky was dark, and the waves crashing onto the shore were fierce.

Hopefully that wasn’t an ominous sign of things to come. There were no new notifications on her phone, which meant no progress to report on her case. Dylan’s cousin had traveled to DC to help Rosetto in the office.

Brooke’s stomach rumbled. She threw together a green smoothie with what she could find in the fridge, then went back to the window. The clouds were darker than they’d been just a few minutes earlier. Then a bolt of lightning flashed across the sky, followed quickly by a rumble of thunder.

Rufus lowered an ear and stepped closer to Brooke.

“Probably better get you outside before it gets worse.” She grabbed a black hoodie from the coatrack—most likely her sister’s—then attached the leash to Rufus’s collar.

The porch shook as thunder rumbled. Rufus growled.

“You tell it, boy.” Brooke tugged on the leash, urging him forward.

Rufus continued growling as they made their way to a grassy patch. Lightning lit up the sky. Just as the thunder clapped, fat raindrops fell from the clouds.

“Hurry up,” she urged the pup.

He continued growling at the weather.

Brooke glanced at her ankle band, still not sure if it was safe to get wet. “Come on.” She led Rufus under some trees, which provided a little relief from the downpour. Luckily, it was enough to distract him and he peed.

Then they raced inside. Rufus shook off, then stayed by the door and barked each time thunder rumbled. Brooke grabbed a dish towel and wiped down the band after hanging the now-dripping hoodie back on the hook. Once she was satisfied, she wiped up the floor and the walls that had gotten wet after Rufus had shaken his fur out several times.

The pup looked at her expectantly.

She twisted her drenched hair into a loose bun. “Since I’m already soaked, I may as well get a shower.” Dylan might show up soon, and he couldn’t see her like that.

An hour later, Brooke reclined on the couch not paying attention to the romantic comedy she’d streamed. Bad idea or not, she was checking social media to see what people were saying about her arrest and the senator.

She had notifications on her phone. Most were either from work or curious semi-friends who were interested in the gossip. The one that stood out was an offer from Maggie to bring over a meal.
