Today’s meeting with the warden went better and Swann had gained permission to start working with Brady in a secure office. The online work would be monitored of course, but they weren’t working anything confidential right now anyway.

Everything seemed brighter this morning and when he inadvertently bumped his hand on something, he smiled. Michelle’s kisses were so sweet, so full of promise. He couldn’t wait for dinner tonight. Couldn’t wait for what he hoped followed when they got back to his great aunt’s house.

After reading through the email update from Gamble, Swann felt outrageously confident about the meeting with Brady. The youthful prisoner wasn’t nearly as excited to see him, but when he saw the laptop, he perked up.

Swann decided not to go straight at the issue of who framed Brady, or who he might willingly be covering for. Instead, he set the kid up with searches into Michelle’s recent orders and her auction house contacts, just to see what he dug up while he sat across the room and made a few calls.

He knew Brady was listening as he spoke with Hank, taking down names of people they should interview or research for the case. Swann highlighted names when they got a reaction out of the kid. He hoped Brady avoided poker games because otherwise the kid would lose his shirt.

A guard walked in about an hour before Swann was ready, stating that their time was up. He didn’t fight it, just thanked the kid for his help and told him he’d be back tomorrow.

Outside in the rental car, he reviewed what the kid had found on auction houses in Oklahoma. Brady had created a spreadsheet with sale dates, buyers, and notations on high-value pieces. Swann hadn’t asked for that, but it did help.

Leavenworth had several antiques dealers, each of them with a slightly different focus or style. Two had made purchases from the same auction house in the past year, but no one else had reported a break-in or attempted burglary.

He did his own search on the public police record and when he saw that Michelle had also reported a break-in at her house, and called for help when she’d been followed, his instincts went into overdrive. Now he understood why she’d retreated to Ellen Sue’s place.

Uneasy, he called Claudia. “I’m sending you some information. I think a friend of mine is being targeted, but I don’t know why.” He gave her what he had. “Brady came up with the spreadsheet.”

“It looks good.” She was quiet for a minute. “He’s really thorough.”

“Good to know.”

“You think he’ll fit into the agency?”

“My gut says yes, if I can figure out how to get him out of here. Let me know what you find.”

“Will do.”

Swann ended the call and stowed his devices before heading to the LPD. Hopefully he could coax the full story out of Officer Quinn before coaxing Michelle out to dinner.
