Hours later, Antoine knocked at Gemma’s hotel room door, take-out in hand.

She answered, looking much more comfortable in leggings and a long sweater. “What’d ya bring? That smells really good.”

“It wouldn’t be right if you left without trying poutine.”

Her brow knitted, she dug into the bag as soon as he set it down. “French fries and gravy?”

“And cheese curds.”

“Sounds interesting.” She dropped onto the sofa and crossed her legs, food in hand. “Despite all the awkwardness, I had fun tonight.”

“I’m very glad.” He took a seat next to her. “So, will you go out with me tomorrow?”

“Hmmm.” She tapped her chin with her fork. “Yes. You’ve already teased me with the promise of a surprise. I’m eager to find out what it is.”

“Let’s eat. Then we can compare schedules and plan shopping trips.”

“You’re really serious about that?”

“I am. Maybe it will help with clients at home. If your regulars know you have a trip planned, you can shop for multiple people while seeing sights.”

She wiped her mouth with a napkin. “I wasn’t sure about the cheese curds, but—wow—this is good. And I like your idea.”

“From your reaction yesterday, I worried the long-distance thing would be a problem for you.”

She pinched her lips together and focused on the lamp on the far side of the room. “I want you to know that if you hire me, I’ll shop no matter what.”

He tried to rein in his runaway emotions. “Okay.”

She set her food down. “Oh, I might as well just tell you.”

Bracing for the hard let down, he also set his food on the table. “Tell me what?”

She’d seemed so open, he hadn’t the least idea what to expect.

“In my limited experience—which I have absolutely no desire to talk about—long-distance relationships don’t work. That said, I’m willing to give this a go. We passed go weeks ago, I think.” She trailed her finger down a seam in the sofa. “It’s the after part I can’t even think about, but we are a long way from anything more than dating, right?”

Her words coiled his emotions in a knot. Convinced the relationship was doomed, she’d still flown out to see him. That was good. She hated the idea of moving. That was bad.

She blinked, still waiting on a response.

“Right. Dating.” If that was what she needed to hear, he’d start there. Curious about the limited experience, he was also relieved. If her past wasn’t a point of discussion, his didn’t have to be either. “And, Gemma, you don’t have to tell me anything about what happened before.”

She nodded and reached for her food.

“What did Paige and Zoe say about the dress episode?”

“How do you know I called them?” She poked at a French fry.

The tiny bit of gravy on her lip was too tempting. He leaned close, wiped it off, then kissed the spot. “I just guessed.”

“Zoe laughed. Austin must be rubbing off on her. Paige was sufficiently horrified.”

“I need details.” Antoine leaned back, laughing as Gemma recounted the conversation word for word.

After hours of laughter and a couple of glasses of wine, Antoine stretched.
