CHAPTER NINETEEN

Rhett

“Uncle Rhett!” Stella yelled as he climbed down out of his truck. Rhett swung the door closed and watched his youngest niece gallop over the yard on her stick horse. “What’re you doin’ here?”

“Came just to see you and Ellery Bean,” Rhett told her. “And Rosie,” he added when Stella tipped her head at him and gave him the evil eye. At the mention of her stick horse’s name, she beamed. Even batted her eyelashes at him. Rhett snorted softly, wondering if she picked that up from her mother—his ex-sister-in-law—or Summer.

“Stell—Oh, hey, Rhett.” Summer stepped out the front door of Taj’s house. Rhett mentally corrected himself; Summer was living with his brother now. They hadn’t talked about marriage in anything other than very nondescript generalized ways, but Rhett knew his brother. Taj was head over heels in love with Summer Lockland, despite trying hard not to be when they first started seeing each other. “Whatcha doing?”

Rhett and Stella crossed the yard, Stella back on Rosie. Taj had been a rodeo champion when he was younger, but injuries had taken their toll on his body. And his ex-wife, then girlfriend, announced she was pregnant. Taj had stepped up, married Marley, and got a real job, but Marley burned through his savings and then found herself a new sugar daddy.

While Rhett wasn’t one to talk about people when they weren’t around to defend themselves, he wasn’t a fan of Marley. The only good thing to come from his brother’s marriage to her was this little spitfire beside him and her big sister, Ellery. He eyed Stella as they approached the porch where Summer stood. The little girl dropped Rosie at Summer’s feet and wrapped her chubby little arms around her legs.

“Just came by to say hi,” he told Summer.

“Nice.” She nodded. “Want some lemonade?”

“Yes.”

“Grab Rosie, Stel,” Summer told Stella as she turned back to pull the screen door open again. Taj’s house—Summer and Taj’s house—was very small. Not a tiny house as Marley liked to call it when she had an ax to grind with Taj. But it was small, and adding Summer and another baby was going to make for tight quarters. Taj had mentioned that he and Summer planned to add on, making space for the older girls to have their own rooms.

Stella grabbed Rosie the stick horse from the porch and hurried inside ahead of them. Rhett liked that Summer didn’t belittle Stella for having the wild imagination to pretend that Rosie was real and that Stella wanted to be in the rodeo one day. Marley had done her best to squelch any discussion, pretend or not, about rodeo and make believe.

“Taj is out back,” Summer announced when they were in the kitchen. “He’s got the lot marked up back there for the addition.”

“Really?” Rhett watched her pour two glasses of lemonade. “That’s great. I told him I’d help him.”

She nodded. “Well, I mean, marking it off isn’t a big deal. I’m sure he’d like your help when he starts building.
