CHAPTER ELEVEN
Claire wanted to help Roni. She wanted to offer a place to stay during this grim time, but accommodations at the Smithâs place were already tight. True to Sunrise Sisterhood tradition, Lorelei stepped up and offered her home to Roni and Ashley.
The drive through Sunrise was unimaginable. Tears fell for a much different reason than before. Hearing the description from her daughter, Claire hadnât pictured what those people, her people, went through while she was sunning on the beach and eating fine food. The pile of bricks and personal belongings rested where the apartment complex once stood. Devastating. She was so glad Roni had fallen asleep.
Once her fellow travelers were safely delivered to Loreleiâs home, Claire made the short drive to her husbandâs family farm. For several moments, she remained in the vehicle. She couldnât make her body move. Trees were down. Debris strewn everywhere. She silently thanked the Lord the house continued to stand lovely as ever.
Bridget was the first to welcome her mother home, followed by Dane, and then Billy. Dane took his wife by the hand and didnât let go until they were inside the house. Bridget couldnât recall her father showing such a romantic gesture not even when she was little. Of course, she saw the usual quick kiss when heâd go off to work in the mornings. She also overheard her parentsâ evening talks after supper. Theyâd discuss highlights of their day. Seeing them holding hands as they were now, Bridget felt safe.
âSo, what all needs to be done?â Claire asked. Bridget helped with her luggage.
âDad and Billy plan to start cutting up trees later this afternoon. I was going into town and volunteer for cleanup if you want to go with me,â Bridget answered her mom.
âDo you mind waiting for me to take a quick nap?â Claire wanted nothing more than to help her fellow townspeople. She just needed a quick recharge.
âWe can go tomorrow if youâd prefer. Iâm sure theyâll be plenty to do,â Bridget answered.
Claire kissed her daughter one more time, holding their hug a little longer than usual, while they stood at the top of the staircase. She started down the long hallway to hers and Daneâs large master bedroom. Dane pulled her in and quickly shut the door. The next breath she took was after his lips left hers.
âOh, Claire, I missed you so much.â Dane tightly held his wife. âI thought we were going to lose everything. Thank God Bridget and Billy werenât in the trailer when the tornado hit. We were so blessed. Were you the one who told Roni? Iâm so sorry you had to do that.â
Her husband hadnât talked this much since the moment they met. It was refreshing, if only at a different time. She needed to sleep. Normally, she welcomed the show of affection from Dane. She longed for it. But not now. Now, she wanted a hot shower and a couple hours to relax.

Billy stared out the living room window while he waited for Dane to return.
