THE BATHROOM DOOR OPENS and Kage steps out, steam billowing from the doorway. In any other instance, I’d probably fall to my knees and thank God for the ability to see him like this—a towel loosely tied around his waist and beads of water dripping down his perfectly sculpted abs. But not now. Not after everything I thought I knew beyond doubt turned out to be a lie.

I keep my attention focused on the ceiling in hopes of hiding my bloodshot eyes and tear-stained cheeks. As he walks to the bedroom door, I almost let out a sigh of relief, but instead, it’s a choked sob that pushes its way through. And once it’s out, there is no reigning it back in.

Fuck it.

“He isn’t looking for me,” I cry.

Kage’s movements halt in the doorway, and his hand comes up to grip the trim. For a moment, I think he’s going to ignore me. He stays completely silent and motionless then finally he lets out a heavy exhale.

“Goddamn it,” he grumbles and turns around.

Leaning against the doorway, he crosses his arms over his chest and looks at me expectantly. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wish he was wearing clothes for this conversation, because the state of him right now is very distracting, but I’m not about to risk losing the chance for answers.

I need them too much.

“Does he know where I am?”

He swallows. “Yes.”

Ouch. “And have you made your demands clear?”

“He knows what they are. Yes.”

With every response, the pain gets worse, but what did I really expect?

“Has he even responded at all?”

Kage’s answer is blunt. “No.”

It’s not enough. “What about my mom? She wouldn’t just—”

My words are starting to come out choked and jumbled as he cuts me off. “We have reason to believe he’s been lying to her and everyone else. He was overheard at an event saying that you transferred to Duke.”

I let out a shaky breath, nodding a couple times to at least show him I appreciate the honesty while I try to blink away the tears. The idea that no one was even trying to rescue me was something that never crossed my mind. And why would it? He’s been the ideal father for as long as I can remember. Now he’s making a conscious effort to cover up my disappearance.

“Anything else?” he questions. His tone isn’t warm, but it’s not exactly cold either.

I shrug. “You could tell me what it is you’re trying to get out of him.”

It’s a long shot. One that I don’t expect an answer to. Kage is a man who never shows his cards. And after the way he snapped at me before, I doubt he has any sympathy for me at all—if he can even feel such an emotion. But instead of leaving it unanswered, he nods.

“How much do you know about your grandfather?” He walks over to his dresser as he waits for me to respond.

My grandfather? “What does he have to do with this?”

Kage sighs. “Basically everything.
