“WHEN do you want to do another patrol?”

Sam checked his watch, fighting a grimace when he saw the time. He was tempted to say now just to get out of the house, even if wandering around in the dark with their flashlights wasn’t much better. “The last one was half an hour ago. Maybe another fifteen minutes?”

He thought he detected a hint of disappointment in Maggie’s expression. If that was what she was feeling, she didn’t express it aloud. She simply nodded and returned her attention to her notes.

He understood her restlessness. It was only midnight, but it already felt as if they’d been trapped in the house for days rather than hours. The darkness surrounding them was absolute. The sense of danger grew more ominous the longer the time passed without incident. Other than checking the perimeter of the building every so often, there was nothing to do but wait, nothing to focus on but the walls that seemed to close in with each passing hour.

And Maggie.

She sat on the other side of the kitchen table, the articles spread in front of her, taking notes in her precise handwriting he’d already seen whenever she’d given him a list of materials to pick up. He didn’t know what she expected to find in the stories they’d already read numerous times or hoped to decipher from the day’s events they’d already gone over a million times. Yet she continued, with the same unyielding persistence she’d shown with the house.

For the first time, he couldn’t help appreciating her stubbornness. She certainly didn’t give up when she put her mind to something. He had no doubt that if she’d been on the case to begin with, she wouldn’t have rested until the killer had been caught. She’d be a good person to have on one’s side, no matter the circumstances. Fierce. Tough. Loyal. He only wished she didn’t sometimes waste that single-minded devotion on things that didn’t deserve them, like this damned house.

As he watched, she paused in her writing to reread what she’d just committed to paper, lifting her head without look ing up at him. A lock of blond hair had fallen over her cheek. She made no move to push it back, and for a ridiculous moment before he regained himself, his fingers twitched, itching to reach out and do it himself. Both the hair and her skin looked incredibly soft. He could only imagine what they’d feel like beneath his fingertips. Softer than anything he’d felt in a long time, no doubt. As soft as her mouth, now puckered slightly as she appeared to bite the inside of her lip in concentration…

He abruptly pushed away from the table. “I guess there’s no harm in doing another check around the house this soon.”

Maggie looked up in surprise, then nodded and began to climb to her feet. “All right.”

“You don’t have to get up,” he said quickly. “I can do it.”

She arched a brow. “You wouldn’t let me go out there by myself, would you?”

“No.
