Chapter Sixteen

By the time the debrief was over, my mind felt like jelly.

The guardsmen who came to our rescue dropped the five of us off at Kalmin Hall. Headmaster Kemp met us in the foyer, looking as professional as ever despite the hour in her charcoal suit and burgundy blouse. She assigned each of us a security officer and a nurse before separating us into rooms. I barely remembered the questions the guard whose nameplate read DeSouza asked me, but as I made my way back into the main foyer of Kalmin when my interview was over, I could recall with perfect clarity every tutting noise Nurse Nichols made as she cleaned out the scrapes I sustained during the escape.

Bridger and Clio were already waiting, and I made my way over to them. Headmaster Kemp stood by the mouth of the hall that led to the infirmary, chatting with the nurses who had tended to us.

“Are we waiting for the others before heading back to the dorms?” I asked. Doing so was the polite course of action, but now that the adrenaline from our escape had ebbed, exhaustion pressed down on me, and I wanted little more than to climb into my bed. Although I knew I needed to tell Liza what happened, the call would have to wait until tomorrow—or else I risked falling asleep in my closet while we talked.

“I guess so,” Bridger said, stifling a yawn. “The headmaster told us to wait here.”

I pressed my lips together. That didn’t sound ominous at all.

Within five minutes, Thor and Nate joined us. When the five of us were all standing together, Kemp finally made her way over to us, her expression tight and unreadable. “Never a dull moment for you five, is there?” The corners of her mouth twitched, but she didn’t manage a smile to accompany her forced joke. “Clio, it’s good to have you back.”

Clio inclined her head. “Glad to have made it back.”

The headmaster winced. “I’ll file the proper reports. For now, I think it’s best if you all get some rest. If you make your way out front, a car will be waiting.”

Nate shot a hasty glance toward Clio and me. “I’m sure we can all make it to our dorms on foot.”

She shook her head. “The chancellor requested that you all stay in the guest mansion until the wedding.” She held her hand out toward the front doors. “Like I said, the car is waiting.”

Although the last thing I wanted to do tonight was get into another car, it didn’t look like Kemp was going to take no for an answer. And since I wasn’t entirely sure where the guest mansion was located, I didn’t want to fight for the right to walk somewhere that was too far away.

After a beat, Nate nodded and led the way toward the door. We all fell into line behind him. Within minutes, we were inside one of the school transports as it trundled back toward the main entrance.
