The Gallery
A text came in from him on Friday morning while I was at the grocery store.
Jem: I’m itching to sketch you again.
I smiled and put my apples in my shopping cart.
Me: I’m itching for something too.
Jem: Tonight? Come for another picnic.
Me: Where?
Jem: Our usual spot.
Me: See you at 8.
I loved that he said “our” usual spot. Cosmopolitan Magazine would not condone this running-whenever-he-calls thing, but I didn’t care. It was a little odd that we only hung out at the gallery. Still, I liked it and I didn’t want to question it too much. The only thing I wanted to do was spend time with him and, considering how many men do not follow up after doing more than making love with their eyes or fingers, at least he kept inviting me back into the city for his artsy date nights. And we seemed to be getting to know each other, at least in small doses.
Besides, every time I saw him, I was closer to no longer being a virgin. I loved knowing I could head into Manhattan and be in his arms.
Friday night in the city was always filled with a feeling of freedom and anticipation of things to come. The invigorating energy was palatable. The workweek was through, people were rushing about, and there was romance and possibility in the air. And on the holiday weekend, it felt even more exciting to be on a date.
As I walked through the streets of lower Manhattan to the gallery, I felt like I was one of those people, out and about in the city of romance and possibility. Heading toward a night with my hot professor—well, former professor-slash-possible boyfriend—was becoming a familiar ritual and he was becoming more of a fixture in my life.
Is that what was happening? Was he becoming my boyfriend?
When I got to the studio, I saw him in the lobby of the gallery in ripped jeans with a hammer in his back pocket and white T-shirt half tucked in. He made that T-shirt look so sexy I wanted to lick him. His hair was a mess and curling at the top, and he was just the right amount of sweaty. Something about his smell made me want to rub up against his body and inhale him.
“Ms. Slade, once again you have journeyed into the heartland of my life,” he said, opening the door when he spotted me. I was happy when he grabbed my hand and led me back toward the White Room with a sense of urgency. I loved the way he took control of getting us from one point to another.
“Tonight, we dance away inhibition,” he said, turning up the music playing from his iPhone speakers in the White Room. “It’s a good way to shake the week off, and get your ecstasy on.”
“I’m not much of a dancer,” I said, shy about my two left feet and curious about where the picnic was. Fortunately I ate a late lunch.
