Chapter Eight

There are several letters from Mom and Dad. What Dr. Scott told me was true. They did sign me in here for a minimum of six months. I find a calendar on my wall and figure out I’ve been here for one month. Five to go? As if.

Mom and Dad say they love me, miss me, but feel Spiral is my best chance to recover. Mom writes: Mrs. Green recommended this program for you after she heard that you liked horses. I told her the name of the place put me off because it made me think of a downward spiral. She said to think of it like this: spirals circle inward, not down. They can also lead you out.

Will has written too. His letter isn’t long, but it’s honest. He says: I’m not sorry I ratted you out, Abby. You were getting really mean, you know. And I want my big sister back, not the druggie freak.

The druggie freak. He doesn’t say anything about the cripple freak. He doesn’t care about that? I try to get angry over this, that he doesn’t even see that problem. Instead I cry because he doesn’t see it.

And then there’s a letter from Lily. I wish you’d trusted me enough to tell me, Abby. That’s what hurts the most, you know? I always thought we could tell each other anything. How would you feel if I got into that garbage and hid it from you? Would you feel betrayed? Never mind. I don’t want to make you feel guilty, I just want the old Abby back, the sweet fun person I’ve always known. Do you really think I loved you for your body? Ha ha! Get on with it, girl! Stop feeling sorry for yourself. There, I said it. And if friends can’t tell each other the truth, who can? Please get well soon. Write soon! I miss you.

I am aching to see them. I have to see them. There are no locks on the doors at Spiral, nothing to stop me from leaving. I hunt around in my room for money and don’t find a cent. Not one cent, never mind the quarter I hoped for. If I could just wheel myself to the main road, I’m sure I could find a pay phone. Or hitch a ride to one. Then I could call home, and Mom and Dad would pick me up. For sure they would. I’ll tell them I hate it here, I’m better, I’ll never do coke again. I’ll go to school.

But I don’t have a quarter. So I’ll get to the road and I’ll hitch a ride all the way. That’s actually better. I can tell them in person, and once I’m there, they won’t send me back.

I wait until dark, until after Hilda has done her check on me, and then I haul myself out of bed. I’m already tired, but that’s not going to stop me. I’ll make it. I put a pair of rain pants over my jeans, and once I’ve got my jacket on, I’m ready.
