Chapter Twenty
Luke
I just promised to tell Kirsty the real reason for my dickish behavior. Why did I do that? I'm not sure she can ever understand, not completely, and I will end up sounding like a jerk again. I don't want to be that way anymore. This is my third day with Kirsty, and already I know I'm still in love with her and I never want to walk away from her again. Being an idiot, though, I haven't told her any of that. Even if she wants me the way I want her, I doubt she'll be able to forgive me for what I will do to her, unwillingly.
No, I'm not being forced to betray her. I signed up for this.
Why? Because I'm a raging idiot.
"You know I was an orphan," I begin, "and I got knocked around from one foster home to another. Sometimes I literally got knocked around. So I learned to take care of myself and not let anyone get too close because they would probably get rid of me sooner or later. I wasn't a jerk back then like I am now."
"I'm sorry I called you evil. You are not a jerk, not once you stop trying to keep a wall around yourself."
Yeah, that's exactly what I've done, and she knew that without me telling her. Maybe she does have supernatural powers. No, she's just very intuitiveâand very kind.
"The last social worker I met helped me get into college," I say. "He was good friends with some people at a big charity that helps orphans get a good education. With the scholarship they gave me, I was able to get into the university I'd most wanted to go to, the University of Edinburgh."
"Why a Scottish university? You're American."
"Born in Milwaukee, raised in foster care. But yeah, American." I rub my hand up and down her arm, letting the comfort of her body ease the tension inside me a little bit. "I wanted to escape from my old life. Get far away and start over. Edinburgh has a good physics program, so I went there."
"And we met in our second year at Edinburgh."
I wrap both my arms around her, gazing down into her pale blue eyes. "It was the best thing that ever happened to me. I was completely in love with you."
"Until I confessed that I'm a Wiccan."
"Yeah, that threw me for a loop. And I should explain why."
"Only if you want to."
I touch my lips to hers. "Yes, I want to tell you."
She lays a hand on my cheek, brushing her thumb across my mouth. "I'm listening."
"When I was in foster care," I say, "the only thing that kept me from going nuts was science. I started reading books about it when I was eight, and I never stopped being interested in the subject. Science is about facts and data, what we can quantify and explain unlike people, who are confusing and sometimes mean. I couldn't understand why one foster family after another kicked
