Behind the Pershing, Chuck Miller watched the curbside triage through his telescopic sight.

The medics had given up. It was hopeless. With grim looks on their faces, they stood and stepped away, revealing the patient they had struggled to save—a young woman curled in the fetal position.

A civilian witness would later recount having seen the young woman reaching to aid the wounded driver when she, too, was struck by bullets.

A medic took a long coat from the car. He tenderly covered her up to the shoulders before departing to aid someone else in need.

The woman’s face was turned toward Chuck. Her eyes were glassy and distant. She reminded him of one of his sisters and Chuck wondered if she was already dead.

Then, she blinked.

Chuck reeled back from his telescopic sight, horrified and guilt-stricken. It felt as if she had caught him looking, watching her die.

He couldn’t tell Clarence, he wouldn’t, not with the darkest depths of Cologne—a place that no American crew wanted to go—still ahead.

That man at the Pershing’s gun was Chuck’s best hope of ever reaching home again. Chuck had seen enough of this place to know it.

In the Fortress City, anything could be lurking around the next corner.
