Chapter 6

With Mairin and her fellow bounty hunters dead, Liadan proposed that they loot Eolbed of food, water, and provisions. Ethne was able to collect her armor from the chest where it had been stored in the barracks, the horses were watered and fed at the stables, and then the party gathered at the gates and mounted up. It was the middle of the night and very cold, but everyone had agreed to make haste for Hastow immediately, taking a different route than they had before.

“This new way will be longer,” said Liadan, climbing into the saddle behind Ava, “but it were better we not linger in the same area for too many days. King Eyvor’s hounds should have passed the hunting grounds by now.”

“Aye,” agreed Rowan, mounting her big gray stallion. “Then let us away to Hastow.”

Ethne looked at Rowan in surprise. “Shall you come with us?”

“All the way to the front steps of the temple,” Saoirse confirmed. “Luane, the wretch, has been sent forth to slay Liadan. We would guard the pair of you until you have reached safety. Then we must be on our way. I shant allow Rowan to risk her life needlessly, even for you lot.”

Ethne laughed. “Truly, you are the dearest comrades a knight could ever ask for,” she teased.

Saoirse allowed a small smile. Rowan grinned and winked.

Ethne took her white horse by the reins and turned to Lysa and was stung when Lysa immediately turned her back. The little handmaiden marched over to Saoirse, who was about to mount her pale golden stallion, and asked to join her instead. Saoirse agreed, and – to Ethne’s great irritation – Lysa allowed the blonde knight to lift her by the waist onto her horse. Saoirse then climbed into the saddle behind Lysa and took the reins. Lysa’s cheeks blushed a little when Saoirse’s strong arms reached around her, but she otherwise sat very tense and angry before Saoirse in the saddle, not looking at anyone.

And so, they set off, riding east into the night with Eolbed at their backs. Ethne couldn’t control the overwhelming sadness and anger in her heart. She rode at the very back of the procession. Saoirse and Rowan were riding ahead of her, and she hated the sight of little Lysa bouncing in the saddle before stern, solemn Saoirse. Lysa enjoyed the way Saoirse’s hard, powerful body rubbed against her, enjoyed that Saoirse occasionally glanced with appreciation at her bouncing breasts, enjoyed that Rowan kept making flirtatious jokes – and enjoyed that Ethne was watching and seething.

When they stopped to make camp at dawn, Ethne was exhausted – by her hunger and lack of sleep and also by her anger. The others immediately set about making camp, but she pulled Liadan aside. Together, they walked several feet away, while the others gathered firewood, laid stones for the fire, tended the horses, and chatted back and forth.

“I know what you would say,” said Ethne when Liadan gazed down at her reprovingly, “but I had good reason to be sucking Mairin’s tits!”

Liadan laughed in spite of her anger.
