“You look…stunning,” James said, his gaze slipping down Megan’s body.

“What, this old thing?” She brushed an invisible speck of dust from her dress and shifted from one foot to the other.

He mock huffed. “I don’t think old or thing are suitable words for that dress.”

Megan flushed a little at his approving expression then absorbed the sight of him. He looked so big standing on her doorstep, and his dark suit fitted him to perfection. He didn’t wear a tie and the top button of his pale blue shirt was undone, revealing just a tiny hint of bronzed skin. A sudden memory of the night before flitted through her mind. Her, pulling his shirt from his waistband, smoothing her hands over the soft flesh on his back, grabbing his wide shoulders, dragging him closer, wanting more…

“I will, er…just get my purse. Hang on.” She rushed into the flat, tugged the kitchen window shut then collected her purse and keys.

Damn, I should have invited him in.

No, the place was too messy. She’d spent so long doing her hair and nails, fussing over makeup and applying her red lipstick that she hadn’t got around to tidying. The kitchen was littered with plates and mugs, she had laundry drying on the radiator in the living area—including underwear—and Gucci had left hair on the sofa that needed to be hoovered up.

She pulled in a deep breath, tipped her chin then walked as calmly as she could down the hallway. James was studying her with that oh-so-serious expression of his—the one that pulled his eyebrows low and set his mouth in a straight line that was as sexy as hell.

She wondered what his hopes were for the evening.

Dinner and fun conversation, or more…?

And if he did want more, would she commit to it this time, or would she run?

“I’ve got the car,” he said.

“Oh, that’s good.” She pulled her door shut and locked it. “Is it far then, to the restaurant?”

“Not really.” He led the way down the steps and into the evening sunlight. “It’s back over near Change Street. I’m sorry if you’ve just made that journey.”

“No, I worked from home this afternoon.”

James pointed a set of keys at a shiny black Volvo and it beeped and flashed to life. He opened the passenger door and held it wide. “There you go.”

“Thank you.” Megan smiled and sat inside the car. How chivalrous. She couldn’t remember the last time a man had opened a door for her.

James carefully shut it and walked around the front of the car. His jacket flapped a little in the breeze and he pushed his fingers through his hair. The way he moved was easy and confident, fluid.

He sat in the driver’s seat and started the engine.

Megan could smell him now that they were in an enclosed space. The same delicious cologne he’d had on yesterday but a little stronger, as though it had been applied more recently and wasn’t lingering from a morning application. She licked her lips and fastened her seatbelt.
