Three standard days later a drone came to the lakeside garden to fetch him. Sacheri woke that morning to his standard implant functioning as normal: he was able to communicate on private channels with humans and fai alike, to search for information and news, to control basic atmospheric settings around him. It was a relief, even if the limited reach and deadened sensations also made exceptionally clear how desperately he missed the synplants.

“Paradis would like you to join her in the main courtyard garden,” Cass said through the drone. “Jin is on their way.”

“Can you lead me, please?” Sacheri had gotten lost twice in the last day; the garden paths had been redesigned since his last visit and none of his memories were trustworthy. He’d been found by a drone, thank the stars, and not Paradis.

“I would be happy to,” Cass said.

“Did she say why?” he asked.

“The reports from Oversight have arrived.”

Sacheri looked at the lake, thinking about all of the snakes and biting fish hiding within it.

“No point in waiting,” he said, and followed the drone out of the gate.
