Chapter 5

The sunshine slowly woke her and she looked around, trying to figure out what was wrong. Warmth. Peace. A powerful sense of her world being right.

Yeah, all of that…she wasn’t used to those feelings. Normally, she woke up with a sense of panic, wondering if she’d paid the electric bill or trying to remember her bank balance, calculating how much she could spend on groceries for the week.

Why was she feeling so content? What…

The bed shifted and Natalie’s eyes popped open. Javier! He was still here. Her fingers curled around his muscular arm, which was curled around her waist. Oh no!

Then his fingers twitched and she groaned, realizing that his arm might be around her waist, but his fingers were…good grief! His fingers were holding her breast!

“Javier!” she gasped and sat upright, throwing off the covers and grabbing his shirt, tugging it over her head only moments before Alejandro burst into her bedroom.

“Momma!” her son exclaimed, already jumping up and down. But at the same moment, he looked at her bed, his dark eyes widening as he saw Javier in the bed, lifting himself up onto an elbow.

For a moment, Natalie panicked, worried that Alejandro would ask why his dad was in her bed. But all her son saw was that his dad was still here. “You’re here!” he yelled gleefully and threw himself at his father.

Javier, always agile and athletic, caught his son in mid leap, holding him carefully. Any other day, Natalie would be resentful of how strong Javier was and how he didn’t get smooshed by their son. But at the moment, she was just trying to figure out how to get out of this awkward situation.

And of course, Javier knew exactly what to do and say. He gave Alejandro a good morning kiss, and said, “Why don’t you go get dressed while I do the same? Then we can figure out what we’re doing today, okay?”

Alejandro yelped in agreement, then scrambled off of the bed to his room.

“Sorry, I should have warned you that he intrudes.”

He pushed the sheet off of the bed, unconcerned that he was completely naked, and pulled on his jeans. “Just another aspect of life with a child that we’ll have to figure out,” he told her.

Natalie was just about to tell him that they didn’t need to figure it out since they weren’t having a relationship. But Alejandro was back, dumping his clothes on the floor so that he could dress in her bedroom. He plunked himself onto the floor, ideas running through his mind and he submitted them as possibilities while he worked to get his jeans on over his legs, missing the leg holes repeatedly in his excitement. When his shirt came next, he was too eager to take the time to put it on correctly. Natalie rolled her eyes and slipped out of the room, walking into the bathroom and letting Javier take control of the dressing process.

Leaning against the closed, bathroom door, she pressed her eyes
