Chapter 10: Brother

Roinette stared at the young man. The crescent harp across his chest marked him as no common soldier, but the dagger in his belt and ready stance confirmed he was more than a bard. A Wingmaster, he called himself. A Wingmaster and her brother.

She bit her lip. What if…? Could it be possible? And a mistbender… That explained the voices she heard. Roinette wrapped her arms around herself, drawing a slow breath.

Evrard remained motionless, a second falcon on his arm. What…? Oh, right. Closing her eyes, Roinette entered the Melody.

…if at all possible, the falcon finished.

Evrard’s mouth strained in a tight line and he glanced toward the tower. He jerked as his eyes met hers, grimaced, then sighed. “I’ll come but—” he broke off as the falcon who called himself Andrinian swooped downward.

A mistbender, Evrard! We have to leave!

Evrard stiffened, then vanished.

Roinette blinked and pulled herself back to the Tangible Realm with a shudder.

“Will you come with me?” Evrard asked.

Roinette hesitated, glancing over her shoulder to the rope twisting across the floor.

“I have to leave. Now! A mistbender is coming!”

A mistbender. Like the man with the smooth voice who’d mocked her during her capture. The voices she heard recently. She shivered.

But they wanted Evrard more. She couldn’t just leave Cyrillen and besides—her heart thudded. It made sense. Are you sure he will come? Don’t lose the battle. Are you sure… don’t lose the battle. They wouldn’t harm her. Yet. She must speak with Cyrillen. He would take her to the Prince’s camp himself if she’d be safer there, but Evrard couldn’t stay here.

Her fingers braced white against either side of the window. “You have to go.”

Evrard’s brow furrowed and his jaw clenched.

An ache wrapped about her throat, but she didn’t waver. “Come back, or I will come to you if I can, but you can’t let the mistbender find you here and I can’t leave Cyrillen with no explanation.”

Evrard hesitated as the newest falcon took flight. The other shifted uneasily. “I’ll be back.” He promised. His gaze bored into hers. “You won’t be safe here for long, but I will come back.”

Roinette’s hand clenched a fistful of her skirt. “Go! Hurry!”

Evrard’s hand whitened around his dagger, then he tore himself away and sprinted to the shadow of the walls. A moment more and his shadow faded away on the mist-covered path. Roinette watched until he vanished, then sank to her knees by the window. Punzel leapt to the ground and brushed her whiskers against Roinette’s cheek.

“Well?”

Roinette glanced at the fen-hopper. “Well, what? You seem to believe him.”

The fen-hopper arched her back and rubbed against the wall. “Why not? It fits with the legends.”

Roinette turned toward her friend. “Legends?”

“Obviously. Wingmasters are legend material, in the stories anyway if not exactly legendary to the sight. And if the Wingmasters and all that are true, as they obviously are, the legends about how no other human has the ability to walk in the Melody except, on rare occasions, a twin, are likely true as well.
