Chapter 22: Withstand the Sun

The firebird was perched on the edge of the desk with an eyebrow raised. Fin hadn’t stopped staring at me since Zoran sat me down and cut off a few strands of my hair. The god was mashing it up with some other liquids in a glass jar.

“What?” I muttered, glaring at him.

Fin shrugged. “Just wondering what possessed you into choosing Aedus. Mahkah seems like a typical god, total asshole, but at least, he’s not insane.”

“Enough.” Zoran smacked him in the back of the head.

“Ow!” He leaned forward and rubbed the spot.

“Mind your tongue.” The god held the vial up to the light.

“I was just saying, Aedus—”

Black tar shot at the firebird’s face. It sealed his lips together and knocked him off the desk in the process. I smiled to myself and watched with amusement as Fin rolled around on the floor. The firebird was too true to his element. Flames started to shoot across the floor. I jumped up and retreated when his temper tantrum got a little too close.

“Knock it off.” Zoran blasted the boy and sent him skidding across the room.

The firebird slammed into the wall and slumped to the ground.

Zoran raised a brow when the flames started to build again. “You’ll remain like that until tomorrow if you refuse to behave.”

Fin breathed out hard through his nose, spewing sparks. Folding his arms, he sat there with a scowl on his face. I shuffled to the desk and examined the different colored jars.

“What is all of this?” I leaned down to get a better look.

“Bits and pieces.” He rested the bottle with a clear liquid inside on his palm. It started to boil. He placed a cork on top and left it to simmer.

I swallowed hard. “What do you think it’s going to do?”

“No idea,” he chuckled, scribbling something onto a scroll.

A thick vapor formed under the cork. It started to glow. I staggered back as Zoran watched the container closely.

“I don’t think this is a good idea.” I headed for the door.

“Don’t worry. I did it with the other samples—”

The glass exploded, releasing a flash of pure light. I was thrown through the door and into the hallway. I knew this wasn’t a good idea. Slowly sitting up, I groaned from a sharp pain coming from my shoulder. Everything looked to be still intact, though. My shorts were singed, but there wasn’t any fire at least.

Staggering to my feet, I poked my head into the room that had been torn apart by the blast and stained black. “Zoran, Fin?”

“It hurts! It hurts.”

“Shh... I’ll take care of it.” Zoran gathered the firebird in his arms. “Everything will be fine.”

The boy’s skin glowed a bright red. The god disappeared out the window with Fin in a puff of smoke. I ran over and spotted the cloud heading toward the sea. Letting out a deep breath, I shook my head. I warned him.

“What the hell?”

I turned around to find Aedus standing in the doorway.

“What has he done?!” He tugged at his hair.
