Luke had no experience hiding his emotions—he had never had to. But he’d do it today when he visited Aleen at work. If he didn’t, the dogs would react to his negative energy. Besides, he couldn’t explain this restlessness running through his veins, so why inflict his stress any more on Aleen?

“You must be the veterinarian.” A cute young nurse checked his identification before buzzing him into the locked psychiatric unit.

The dogs were an instant hit, but he noticed that Aleen was busier than usual, so he didn’t get to visit with her at all. He had looked forward to showing off his newly acquired training skills. Aleen had always shown so much enthusiasm for whatever he got into—bringing his work to her workplace was something he had looked forward to for months.

Another nurse alerted him to the fact that dog therapy had to wrap up so the patients could have lunch, so Luke made his way to the nurse’s station so he could let them know how the program had gone.

Aleen was on the phone, arguing with what sounded like an insurance company. He made polite small talk with her friend, Sabrina, and when another nurse he had seen before but never spoken to drifted over to the desk, Sabrina introduced them.

When Aleen finally hung up, she glanced over the desk to see both of her coworkers kneeling down with the dogs, getting their faces lapped.

“That’s so gross,” Aleen lamented.

“Why is it gross? They are lovely little buggers,” Sabrina countered. “Better than any of those dates you’ve had.”

Aleen rolled her eyes. Luke gloated.

“Everything go okay?”

“Yeah, it was great. The dogs did well, and the people responded positively to the animals. I’d be happy to work out a weekly arrangement to start.”

“Awesome. I’ll bring it to the program director and let you know.”

The nurse he had just met, (Carrie?), sidled up to the desk next to him, practically touching his shoulder with hers.

“I’ve heard so much about you, Luke.”

“I can imagine what Aleen would have said. Just know that any stories that make me sound like anything but a perfect gentleman are lies.” He flashed a flirty grin at the giggling nurse. He didn’t mean anything by it—it was his natural way of communicating with women—but if it served the purpose of making Aleen a little jealous, he’d consider that a bonus.

“I’d love to get together and have a coffee or something with you sometime. I’m very interested in the therapy dog program. Maybe you can give me some pointers on starting one of my own.”

Her lips said the words, but her eyes suggested another motivation.

“Yeah, sure, maybe you, me, and Aleen could meet up after work one night. Or before work some morning.”

Her face fell a little.

“I think she’s trying to ask you on a date, Lukey.” Aleen smiled, taunting her now-blushing coworker.

He feigned surprise.

“I say you two should go for it. You’d be cute together.” Aleen didn’t look away as she set him up. If he had hoped to make her jealous, his plan had backfired miserably.
