THE STORM WINDS seemed slightly less ferocious to Sophie than they had the day before. Either the blizzard had eased a fraction, or her California-girl self was getting used to bundling up in multiple layers just to venture outside, and spending the rest of the time huddled next to a fireplace.

Or else, she admitted inwardly as she followed the path Griffin was breaking through waist-deep snow, it was easier to think about the weather than it was to think about what had happened back in the apartment. She wasn’t sure which information was more staggering in the grand scheme—that he’d bought his son from his gold digging ex-wife and had pretty much sworn off women until Luke was older…or that that she and Griffin had admitted to their mutual attraction.

She probably ought to have felt uncomfortable about that, but she didn’t. She felt empowered. Feminine. And more than a little daring.

Griffin had admitted that he wanted her sexually. He didn’t want to want her, granted, but the attraction was there. After what she’d been through with her recently ex-sneak-around-almost-lover, Tony Spellman, and his evil fiancée, Destiny, it was nice to know that a powerful, virile man like Griffin could desire her and be honest about it, without all the subterfuge she’d experienced in that other non-relationship.

Smiling secretly to herself from deep inside the hood of her parka, behind a woolen muffler, she labored through the snow as Griffin reached the woodshed and started kicking snow away from the door, shoving it off to one side. Just as she reached him, he jerked back with a curse.

“Don’t look!” He turned and grabbed her and tried to drag her away, but she stayed rooted in place, her eyes locked on to the grisly sight he’d uncovered.

There, leaning up against the woodshed, was a man’s body, cold and blue and frozen. He was wearing dark clothes and one glove, with a woolen cap pulled down over his forehead, and a muffler dangling below his chin. His eyes were open and staring, sightless and frozen. Even worse, at least as far as Sophie was concerned, was the patch of red-stained snow near his side, where he’d been gut-shot.

“It’s Perry,” Griffin said, his voice rough, and sounding too loud in a momentary lull of the storm winds.

“I killed him.” At first Sophie didn’t know if she’d said the words or merely thought them, but when she felt Griffin curl his arm around her shoulders despite their earlier conversation about keeping things all business between them, she knew she’d said them aloud. And he wasn’t arguing. Worse, he was holding her.

Which meant it was real.

She had killed a man.

Shock rattled through her, freezing her in place. Self-protection or not, the contractor was dead because of her. He had a wife and kids waiting at home for him. Somehow that knowledge made her actions all that much more awful.

“I should have—” She broke off, because what could she say, really? If she hadn’t acted, he might have killed her and Griffin.
