“Sorry, Kate, just a minute longer.” Laura winced in sympathy as she ran a swab across the lacerations on Kate’s cheek, where an X-ray had shown a hairline fracture to her cheekbone. Kate had gratefully swallowed the painkillers suggested by the locum doctor before Laura had started the task of cleaning the wounds ready for suturing.

“I hate local anaesthetic,” Kate muttered, her knuckles white from clutching the blanket across her lap.

“Yeah, but I recommend it for these. Shit. Grit your teeth. There’s a bit of dirt in here.”

“I don’t think they can get any more gritted,” Kate said, trying anyway. “You know, I’d say that to Sam, ‘grit your teeth, honey,’ and she’d not make a sound. She must have been hurting like hell and so scared, but she just put up with everything I had to do to her.”

Laura discarded her final swab and pulled her gloves off, resting one hand over Kate’s. “I’m sure you don’t want platitudes, Kate, but they said everything was going okay, and if she’s as tough as you reckon, well, I’m guessing she’ll be giving you a run for your money before you know it.”

Kate squeezed Laura’s hand gratefully. It had been half an hour since their last update from theatre and she was fervently hoping that no news was good news.

“Okay, we’re all done here. I’ll see if I can track down the good doctor for you. How about a cup of tea and some toast? Your first blood pressure was crap and your sugars could be higher.”

“Mmm, that’d be lovely, thanks.” Kate rested her head against the pillow, the painkillers having helped the throbbing subside to a dull ache. Laura piled another blanket on top of her, and Kate let out a slow breath, the constant feeling of anxiety beginning to release its grip on her. The police had asked for a statement but were willing to wait. They were busy enough with Eric, who had been given a dose of Narcan on Kate’s instruction and was under observation in a side ward. Her mother had been contacted and assured of her safety, while a villager had volunteered to feed her cat and Mackenzie had arranged for someone to feed Sam’s. Meanwhile, Laura was making her tea and toast.

She closed her eyes and the sounds of the hospital faded. She instantly saw the interior of the barn. The smell of blood was everywhere but couldn’t mask the putrid stench of the man she had killed. Sam’s hand was limp and lifeless in hers and Kate couldn’t move as Sam’s eyes rolled and her breathing slowed. Kate could hear herself hyperventilating and she yelped as a voice broke sharply through the images.

“Kate!”

Her eyes flew open and she took in the familiar white walls of the hospital cubicle and Laura’s worried face. “Sorry,” she whispered, her mouth bone dry. “Shit.” When she touched a hand to her face it came away damp with tears and sweat.

“You dozed off. Here.”

Laura gave her a cool flannel and she wiped her face carefully.
