Episode Six

Truth Unfolds

We strolled away without haste. We knew Mathias awaited us on the walk home. About two miles from the cottage, the winged creature joined us, cantering out of the woods north east of the lake on the outskirts of town. He pulled up alongside Kane.

You need to warn Seth about Trivia, Mathias. Tell him to move slowly with her. Kane stopped and stared at the horse.

She made me as uneasy as Hecate had when she kidnapped me. I padded over to Mathias and looked into his dark eyes as he bent down to me. If she isn’t the witch, then she has some ulterior motive.

Kane touched the horse’s snout and moved closer to him. Mathias, do you know the legend of Hecate’s mating ritual?

Mathias stretched his wings and then relaxed them to his side. The one where she returns to earth to create a demon seed with a truly pure man?

That’s the one. Kane patted Mathias’ forehead.

Mathias pawed at the snow, muddying it with underlying dirt. Then, I will be watchful for Seth’s sake. But, I bring you a warning as well.

Kane, Scrawny and I eyed the horse expectantly.

The remaining ten Kresnicks are still here in the forest. They want revenge for Thomas’ death. Hecate is present as well. So, it is clearly possible Hecate and Trivia are one in the same.

Damn. Kane’s hand went to his chest. How do you know this?

I spied their new leader, Daniel, making a pact with the witch near the lake at dusk, just before Trivia arrived at Seth’s.

What kind of pact? I interjected.

A familial one. They have traded their souls to give her strength. Mathias snorted at his own response.

That means they could protect her from any interference with her plans for Seth. I sat back on my haunches hard.

It will also give them the further magic they need to take revenge for Thomas and Mia’s death. Kane looked from me to Scrawny. I think there can be no doubt Hecate is Trivia.

I stood. Now we must convince Seth of it.

Mathias stomped his foot. The idiot is truly blind or under her spell – one or the other. I have tried to warn him. He will need proof before he snaps out of his lovesick mewling over her.

Hmm... I wonder what is transpiring between the two lovers now. Kane turned to look pointedly at me. Snow Blood, what do you think of you and Scrawny doing a little reconnaissance?

Why do you insist on using big words on me, Kane? I sat back on my haunches. Because of Brogio, I have a fairly good grasp of human language, but every once and awhile you throw me a curve ball. I stood up. What’s “reconnaissance”?

Mathias snorted and shook his head. He wants you to spy on them.

All right. Scrawny jumped and circled around, ready to go.

Sure. I nipped at Scrawny to settle down. We can.

Don’t take long. You know Brogio doesn’t like you to be too far away from him. Kane tweaked my ears, and Scrawny and I headed to Seth’s cottage.
