SEVEN

Dawn was just beginning to steal the stars from the sky when Katrina opened her eyes. Warm and content, she ran her fingers lightly across the midnight-blue sheets of Jack’s bed, where they’d moved from the garden sometime during the night. Once here, they’d made love again, less frantically than before, taking the time to explore each other’s bodies in a hundred deliciously erotic ways. He had, she’d concluded after a lengthy examination, a magnificently beautiful body. She’d told him so and he’d growled darkly, saying that “magnificently beautiful” didn’t sound very macho. He proceeded to show her, in great detail, how extremely macho he was.

All things considered, she’d gotten precious little sleep last night. And had a fantastic time doing it. Sated and sleepy, she leisurely untangled herself from the night-hued covers. “I love satin sheets,” she said, yawning.

“I’m more partial to what’s in those sheets,” Jack said, deep laughter rumbling in his chest. He reached out and brushed an unruly curl from her forehead, his rough-cut fingers impossibly gentle. “Morning, Kitten.”

His voice was soft and reverent, like a prayer. Kat’s heart swelled inside her, aching with almost unbearable pleasure. It seemed that all her life she’d been waiting for someone to say “Morning, Kitten” in just that way. “Morning,” she answered, matching his reverence. And then, just to keep things in perspective, she added, “You snore.”

“Do I?” he said, grinning. “Well, that’s your tough luck.” He drew back his hand and raised himself on his elbow, looking down at her. His hot gaze wandered over her with undisguised appreciation. “You sure wake up pretty.”

“I’m a mess,” she argued self-consciously. “My eyes are puffy and my hair’s a disaster.”

Inwardly Jack groaned. Women. Why did they always equate neatness with desirability? “You are, hands down, the most beautiful, most tantalizing, most sexy woman I’ve ever had the pleasure to wake up with. And if I didn’t think it’d endanger my health, I’d prove it to you.”

“Really?” she whispered. “You really think I’m sexy?”

Jack made a sound of exasperation. “Good Lord, after last night you have to ask? Kitten, the earth moved. It’s never been like that for me before.”

Kat caught her breath. Vivid scenes of their passionate lovemaking bombarded her mind. Bold and primitive, Jack had introduced her to the intoxicating joys of loving and being loved in return. Yet he was also a generous and giving lover, helping her to rediscover the desires she’d kept hidden away since the trial, afraid to trust her feelings again. With Jack she wasn’t afraid to be totally and completely herself, a freedom she’d never shared with any man, including Preston. If that didn’t qualify as “earth-moving,” she didn’t know what did. “I guess that makes two of us,” she whispered.

Life’s sweetest pleasure, she decided, was waking up in the bed of the man you loved. Relaxed, radiating happiness, she stretched like a contented cat. Her hand slipped lazily under the pile of satin pillows and unexpectedly brushed something coolly metallic. Puzzled, she closed her fingers around the small object and drew it out.
