Chapter Ten - Kate
I had the strangest dream last night.
I dreamt I was sitting on the beach with James. We were quietly overlooking the ocean, and neither of us said a word to one another, and it was strangely intimate. At one point, he reached over to grab my hand, and I let him.
In fact, I wanted him to keep holding me.
Even deep in my sleep, his handsome features had been so vivid and clear in my mind. I wanted to reach over and touch his face, but my arms were too heavy. I felt like I’d been anchored onto the shore and was permanently stuck there. No matter how hard I tried to move, I just couldn’t do it.
I woke up from the dream in a light sweat around six in the morning, and I figured there was no point to try and fall asleep again. So instead, I spent the morning making another pot for Barbie. I still hadn’t received a reply from her, but I knew the job often kept me from my phone as well.
Writing was both a solitary and sometimes all-time consuming occupation. Not that I was complaining. I missed writing more than anything.
I padded around barefoot in my sweats and headed to the kitchen for a cup of coffee and a bagel. As soon as I sat down with a large cup of brew in my hands, my phone buzzed on the counter, and I quickly reached for it thinking it was Barbie.
But my heart skipped a beat when I realized it was from James. His name was “ASS” in my contacts, and it made me laugh a little to see a text from him, but then my face fell into complete seriousness when I read his message.
I usually never apologize, especially when it comes to my assistants, but I might have been a little too harsh with you yesterday. I just want you to respect my wishes – as your boss, of course. Please be ready by noon today, I’ll have my driver pick you up. We need to take you shopping and to the salon. The premiere is still a few days away, but we have a lot of work to do. No offense.
I rolled my eyes since I had no trouble believing he had difficulty offering sincere apologies. Then I shook my head and began to text a reply.
Fine. I’ll be ready by noon. See you then.
I huffed and ate the rest of my small breakfast without any more disturbances. James was just so … complicated. I understood he had trust issues, but who the hell didn’t? Still, I felt terrible when he told me his mother abandoned him. Obviously, I was no psychologist, but that would certainly explain his unstable relationships with women. I’d done a little research on him after he confessed his mother dumped him at some random hospital, and despite his good looks and fame, his life hadn’t been an easy one.
He bounced through different foster homes until he ran away to Hollywood when he was eighteen.
