CHAPTER TWELVE

Mike quickly put the car in reverse and got out of there, but he wasn’t moving fast enough for Kat. “Hurry,” she said, cuing Lira to lie down as Kat hid her own face.

“You want to look guilty?” he asked in exasperation.

“No, I just don’t want to lose Lira.” The more time went on, the more certain she was that if anyone stopped them, Lira wouldn’t survive being returned to her owner.

“Well, they may not know it was Lira, and I don’t want to arouse their suspicions.” He turned right out of the campground, still going too darned slow.

“Where are you going? The highway is in the other direction.”

“And that’s where they’ll expect us to go.”

“But you don’t even know what’s out this way,” she protested.

“Actually, I do. Don’t worry—I have a plan.”

“You do?” She was glad one of them did.

“Yes. I have a friend who lives out this way.”

“Out in the middle of nowhere?”

He cast her an amused glance. “It’s not nowhere to him. He boards and trains horses, and I help him out now and again with vet care.”

“Why didn’t you think of this place before?”

“Because I didn’t want to get him involved in something that might make him an accessory to a crime.”

“Oh.” She winced inwardly. She didn’t really want to involve anyone else, but what choice did they have?

Mike pulled his phone from his pocket. “Here—go to my contacts and call Clint Hardison, then put the call on speaker so I can talk to him.”

Now that she had something concrete to do, she calmed down a little. She did as he asked and soon heard a man’s voice on the line. “Hello.”

“Hi, Clint. This is Mike Duffy.”

“Hey, Mike. What’s going on?”

“Well, I’m in a spot and I hope you can help.”

Mike wasn’t going to tell Clint about Lira, was he? Kat’s eyes widened and she held her hand up, waving frantically for him to stop.

He grimaced at her and shook his head impatiently.

Clint seemed to hesitate. “Well, I’ve got a problem myself at the moment, but if I can help, I will. What’s up?”

“I was on my way to Dogwood with one of my assistants, Ka—Katie,” Mike said, and Kat relaxed at this indication Mike wasn’t going to reveal anything that might jeopardize Lira. “But the road’s closed due to an accident. The cabins at the campground near you are all full up, so I was hoping we could stay in your guest house until the road opens again.”

“You’re near here now?” Clint asked, his voice sharpening.

“Yes—very close.”

“Good. I’m in need of some help right now myself.”

“What’s the problem?”

“I think Cinnamon has colic. Can you check her out for me?”

“Of course. We’ll be there in five.”

“Good. I’m in the barn.”

Mike nodded at Kat to hang up and she did so, asking, “What’s colic?” She’d heard of babies having it, but didn’t think Clint would ask for a vet’s help with an infant in a barn.

“It’s basically gastrointestinal pain. In this case, in a horse.”

Relieved, she
