About an hour later, they approached a ramshackle hut nestled against a huge, ancient-looking tree.

Darren bumped into his shoulder to get Rafe's attention. "Is this the place?"

Stepping on Darren's toes to get back at him, Rafe confirmed. "It is."

"You know," Darren stopped walking, waiting to finish his sentence until Rafe did the same. "When we're done with all this drama, I wouldn't mind if you showed me your home properly."

He'd never gotten the chance to share his home with Vivian nor had he ever felt any inclination to do so. Yet, here was Darren who he'd only met a few days ago, a stranger, and he wanted nothing more than show off every single spot which mattered to him. Before he could stop himself, he blurred out. "I'd like that."

Darren's soft smile had his heart fluttering and something precious stirred inside him. Darren stopped looking at him, staring at something just over his left shoulder. "There are flowers there. They looked cared for. I guess that answers the question if she's still alive. What was her name again?"

"I never said. She's called Old Harry."

"Harry?"

"Short for Harriett, boys."

Both men jumped, startled by the appearance of a wrinkled, old woman. They both turned until they faced her. When Darren made as if he wanted to assist her, she held up her walking cane, nearly hitting him with it.

"I can take care of myself," she snarled.

"Yes, of course." Darren retreated.

Rafe could barely keep his face expressionless, laughter bubbling up from inside him. His lips might've twitched but that was the extent to which he showed his amusement.

Deciding to move past their awkward meeting, Rafe waved at her, not wanting to risk his limbs by approaching her. "I'm Rafe, Raphael Danko?" He phrased it as a question because she might know the name. "We've never really met," he continued, "But I grew up on the other side of the village."

"Danko, Danko…" She mumbled the name a few times as if by repeating it, she could trigger her memories.

"If you wouldn't mind, we've got a few questions for you." Rafe added.

"Yes, yes, I bet you do."

Rafe frowned. "What do you mean?"

"Help me, young man." She was using her cane again to point at Rafe. "There's a nice spot just past those trees. We can sit there and chat."

Rafe shared a look with Darren. Without actually saying the words out loud, Darren managed to convey you're alone in this. Touch her at your own risk.

She tapped the ground with her stick, making a muffled pop pop sound. Rafe hurried towards her, holding out his arm, which she took gingerly. Then, at the slowest pace he'd ever encountered, they walked past the palm trees. When the last shred of vegetation fell away, they stood before a small pond.

Rafe eyes were immediately drawn to the small waterfall feeding the clear water. "This is where Ninae springs from?"

"It is."

"What's a Ninae?"

"It's a small river dividing our island in two. It provides most of our drinking water since its water is filtered through the rocks, giving it a good quality.
