“Birds sing after a storm. Why shouldn’t people feel as free to delight in whatever sunlight remains to them?”

~ Rose Kennedy

JILLIAN TEXTS ME with an invitation for some wine and homemade, chocolate-covered strawberries. I should say no, but I can’t bring myself to. There is something about her that calls to me. Makes me feel protective. Which is a little crazy, because the person I want to protect her from the most is me.

I missed her like crazy over the last week.

Having the pleasure of seeing her naked body, but not touching her, did little to ease the ache in my groin. Today, I hope to avoid any awkwardness. I can hardly forget all the things we did, and promises I made of what I would do to her if we were alone.

I show up with flowers—roses. I know they send a message, but I can’t find it in me to worry about that now. It has been forever since I had an occasion to be romantic and buy roses for a woman. My hands are clammy, and it feels like I’m standing inside of a sauna. I am not nervous about being at her door, I am more nervous about how much this woman revs me up.

“Do you want to come in?”

Every inch of me wants to accept her invitation, but I know if I stay, there will be no way for me to fight the pull of our attraction. I can barely keep my eyes off her ass in tight yoga pants, and from the looks of things, she is not wearing a bra under that tank. Knowing what lies beneath makes me want her even more.

I have replayed the other night so many times in my mind, finding my own release as she whimpered my name. You would think at my age, I wouldn’t have been so easily shaken by an attractive woman. But here I am, standing here before her, and once again I can hardly contain my feelings.

“Thank you.” I hand her the flowers and step inside. She seems tired. She’s still beautiful, but I can tell she hasn’t been resting well from the marks under her eyes. I wonder if it’s due to her brother’s impending move, or the fact she cannot get her mind off of me either.

Immediately, she brings the six bouquets up to her nose to smell the floral scent of the colorful rose petals. Her reaction tells me I did the right thing.

“I was not sure which color was your favorite, so I bought a little bit of everything.”

At the store, I couldn’t decide on what to pick. I first settled on regular red. There are also Fire and Ice roses; their petals—smooth red on one side—with a silvery shade on the other. The yellow roses immediately caught my attention next because of how bright and sunny they are, reminding me of Jillian’s smile. White always seems to be a color associated with innocence, but they, too, remind me of her soft skin.
