Chapter Eight
The phone woke Kelly shortly after seven.
She glanced over the rumpled covers at Danâs dark hair peeking from beneath the sheets. She warmed with a glimpse of his bare shoulder and relaxed expression. He actually looked peaceful. She hadnât thought it possible.
As much as sheâd fought it, Kelly cared for this man. Deeply. While their emotional connection had been tenuous ever since theyâd met, making love had been seamless, as if theyâd been made for each other.
A shiver of dread danced along her spine and she slapped it away, hoping Dan had spoken the truth when heâd told her what she meant to him. When heâd explained she meant far more to him than a means to an end.
Kelly dragged her attention away from Dan, pulling the receiver close to her mouth and forcing out her groggy voice. âHello.â
âKelly, itâs Vince.â
She came awake in an instant, trepidation rippling through her. âVince.â
Dan pushed himself up from his pillow, frowning. He reached for the phone, but Kelly turned her back.
âIâm sorry to call you so early, but I wanted to make sure you got your card.â
Kelly shivered. âI did. Thank you.â
âWhere were you?â
âI was out with a friend.â
âA friend?â He paused for a beat, and Kellyâs breath caught. She didnât want to set him off. âI didnât know you had friends down here.â
She thought quickly. âFrom college. She stopped by and we went out for a late dinner. No big deal.â She fought to keep her voice calm, fervently hoping heâd believe her lie.
âO-kay.â He drew the word into two syllables. âJust wanted to make sure you were all right. I was surprised you werenât there. After all, I had mentioned dinner.â
Kelly winced. âIâm sorry. I completely forgot.â
âAnother time perhaps.â
âPerhaps.â Not if she could help it. Just hearing the manâs voice set her teeth on edge. âThanks for calling, Vince. Iâll talk to you later.â
Kelly hung up quickly and turned to Dan. He had pulled on his jeans and stood watching her, hands on his hips, brows furrowed. His peaceful expression had been replaced by the familiar determined intensity.
âIs it too early to call your reporter friend?â
Kelly shook her head. Dan closed the space between them, reached for her chin, but then lowered his hand to his side without touching her.
Kelly blinked, taken aback by the detached stance he assumed. No one would ever guess at the level of intimacy theyâd shared last night.
Dan shrugged into his shirt. âMake the call. Iâll start some coffee.â He pivoted sharply, disappearing down the hall.
She stared at the empty threshold for several long seconds. Had Dan already begun to regret letting her behind his protective wall? Or had she misjudged him? Misread him?
Maybe their night of lovemaking had been nothing more than two people clinging to each other after their brush with death. She shivered. Maybe he was just using her after all.
