Chapter 9
Charlie leaned against the bloody Mini. She was a coward. Seeing Elle reminded her of the fucking amazing sex theyâd had the other day, the way Elle had teased her, and soothed her, and helped her get rid of all the pent-up energy caused by her motherâs media dramas. All of that would be fine, until sheâd walked closer and started to tease her and then it had all come rushing back.
Every time they fucked, Elle made an excuse afterwards and left. And now instead of talking to her about it, Charlie was hanging out next to a bloody car, too timid to ask Elle why. Why didnât Elle stick around for her? Before ... it hadnât mattered. Charlie had been the one to leave, or at least when Elle left, Charlie had been relieved that she hadnât wanted a relationship. Now ... when Charlie tried to relive her old life it didnât satisfy her. She wanted more. She wanted people to stick around for her, to want to be with her for more than just an opportunity to further their career, or just as a good fuck sometimes.
Charlie was just like the Mini. A pretty shell with no substance inside. The car didnât even have an engine. It was just the outside skin of a car that they used as a prop sometimes, just as she was a prop for all her hook ups. Not that sheâd been with many of them since Elle had walked back into her life. Hmm, she squeezed her eyes shut, trying to push away that realisation. She wasnât going to think about why sheâd almost been exclusive with Elle.
Had she really? She opened her eyes and stared at the bloody car.
Sheâd much rather think about the car, than contemplate why she was unsatisfied with everyone except Elle. Ben had rigged up a pulley system and a ramp, so they could pull it onto the stage and then roll it back off whenever they wanted. It was all his fault. The first night he had worked here as a brand new technician, Yolande had walked out on stage to do her 1950s showgirl routine and heâd muttered something about how much cooler it would be if she had a car from the same era. Charlie had shoved him on the shoulder and told him not to be silly. How could they possibly get a car on stage? And heâd proved her wrong. She couldnât even be mad because it was the coolest fucking thing.
âWhich wall do you want to move?â Bethâs voice carried across the room and for a second, Charlie contemplated hiding inside the Mini as Elle walked in with Beth. Coward.
âThis one.â Elle walked over to the far wall, and Charlie was amused to see her glance sideways at her, then focus on her work. âIf we remove it, we can widen the ramp on the other side of the wall, and this room also becomes a lot bigger. Then weâd
