“How was the game?” Mom asks as she turns the SUV onto the highway.

The sky is dark blue and stretches to the horizon. It’s a beautiful winter night on the prairies.

Courtney wonders if she should tell Mom about all the dressing room shenanigans, then decides against it. Mom probably wouldn’t find the stories funny—or reassuring. “It was great,” she says. “I’m having fun.”

“In the end, that’s all that matters,” Mom says.

Chapter 34

The bus battles a headwind as we blow through Drumheller.

Coach plops in the seat beside me. “Next stop—Calgary. Hey, what are you working on?”

His casual tone does not fool me. He’s checking on me.

I show him my computer screen. “Psych. I’ve got a makeup assignment to do.” I tell him about my special paper for Dr. Kerr.

“I’m proud of you, Mac,” he says when I’m finished. “If you need to miss a practice or two—”

“I’m not missing any practices. I’ll figure it out.”

“Glad to hear it.” He gets up.

“Coach?”

He looks down at me and sways with the rhythm of the bus.

“I’ll be better. I’m committed to two things—school and hockey. I promise.”

He raises an eyebrow. “Not Izzie’s brother?”

He knows about Scott? Is that what he and Dan and Robbie talk about in their meetings?

“For sure not him.”

“That’s good news. I never doubted you for a minute, Mac.”

Oh, he did, but not nearly as much as I doubted myself.
