THE MUSIC THRUMMED an incessant beat that Zachâs body echoed as he watched Amanda on the crowded dance floor. She looked like a different woman than she had at the restaurant. About an hour into their dance-a-thon, her red-gold hair had come partially loose and sheâd taken out the rest of the pins to let it cascade past her shoulders.
Sheâd also removed her suit jacket, revealing a simple, short-sleeved blouse that he suspected was silk. Combined with the mid-length navy skirt, she should have looked staid, but heâd never seen a woman appear so sexy in a blouse and a skirt.
Her body wasnât the stuff of typical male fantasies, but it was exactly the type that he preferred. She was on the tall side, heâd guess about five-feet-eight, with small, high breasts and a slender waist. Her hips flared nicely into what he thought was her best featureâslender legs that seemed to go on forever, despite her sensible, low-heeled shoes. He envisioned her legs wrapped around his waist, and his jeans tightened uncomfortably.
When in the name of displaced chivalry had this happened?
This wasnât what heâd intended when he made the impulsive decision to join her in her booth. He hadnât even known what she looked like then. Heâd heard her muffled sobs, and all heâd wanted was to cheer her up. He certainly hadnât harbored any motive of getting into her bed.
If he acted on his impulses, which he usually did, bed is exactly where he suspected theyâd end up. If they did, heâd open himself up to charges that heâd been intending to sleep with her all along. That heâd taken advantage of a woman who had just been jilted by her fiancé. That heâd caught her on the rebound.
She gave him an innocent, trusting smile, and a fresh wave of desire washed over him. He tried to will the wanting away as he watched her, but it was impossible. Sheâd claimed that she wasnât much of a dancer, but her innate grace served her well on the dance floor. With every sway of her body, every turn of her hips, Zach wanted her more.
He gritted his teeth, because this time he wasnât going to surrender to his impulses. Even if it killed him. Heâd only known Amanda Baldwin for a few hours, but already her opinion mattered. And he most definitely didnât want her to think of him as a man on the make.
âEnjoying yourself?â he asked near her ear when the song ended.
His warm breath sent delicious pinpricks along her skin. âImmensely,â she replied, surprised that it was true. Whatever instinct that had possessed her to agree to come dancing with him must have been the right one. She supposed, under the circumstances, it would have been perfectly understandable if sheâd refused to come with him. But heâd offered to drive her home and said all he wanted in return was more of her company.
âGood,â he said.
The lead singer announced that the band was taking a break, and the less-raucous strains of a recorded melody filled the club.
