Chapter Seventeen
Jewel realized that she must have fallen asleep at some point, because she awoke blearily to a pair of dark eyes staring at her seriously from the edge of the bed. A glance behind her told her that Tariq was still dead asleep, and she turned to her daughter with a soft smile.
“It's awfully early to be up, ember,” she said. “Want to climb in?”
When her daughter nodded happily, Jewel rolled back slightly so that Miriam could tuck herself into the curve of her mother's body. Jewel realized with a pang how tall her daughter was getting. Even a year ago, she was so small, and fit so well. She wondered how long it would be before her daughter didn't want to do such childish things at all, and she realized that given Tariq's plan, she would have to give them up perhaps long before she was ready to do so.
Miriam tucked her head under Jewel's chin with a satisfied sigh.
“You doing okay, ember? No bad dreams?”
“No...but we're going to Abu Dhabi, right?” The hope in her daughter's voice made her heart break, and she stroked her daughter's heavy hair.
“Tariq says we're going to go back today, yes, sweetie.”
Miriam paused for such a long time that Jewel thought that she had gone to sleep, but then she spoke again.
“Is it okay if we stay for a while?” she asked, her voice shy. “I like Abu Dhabi, and I didn't like the man who flew us away from here, and I didn't like the room we were in last night.”
Jewel felt her heart squeeze. What had she done to her precious daughter? In that moment, she hated herself for everything that had happened, for taking her daughter away from the opportunities that she had been sorely lacking.
“Abu Dhabi’s going to be home,” she said, carefully not mentioning whom Abu Dhabi was going to be home for.
Miriam looked like she was going to get ready to cheer, but Jewel placed a finger over her lips.
“Shhh, we don't want to wake Tariq,” she murmured. “But yes, when you go to Abu Dhabi, you'll get to go back to school, to see your friends, to go back to your room, everything like that.”
Miriam was practically wiggling with glee, and in an excited whisper, she started to tell Jewel all about the play that the class was going to do, and how everyone was going to get a part. She told Jewel about her classes, and though Jewel had heard it all before, she listened intently.
I want to remember everything about her, Jewel thought. I need to store up a lot of memories before...
Her brain shied away from the inevitable. She knew that there was no way to go against Tariq, but it was more than that. She knew that she shouldn't want to. When she listened to her daughter, there was a liveliness there that had never been there before. She had always thought that Miriam was a happy child, but in a good school, without worrying about what tomorrow might bring, she was ecstatic.
