Chapter Twenty Two

KRISTA

One of the many good qualities my good friend Cheryl possessed was her subtleness. Ha! We were loaded up in my car on our way to pick up Betsy. From there, we would drive up to Cape Girardeau to spend the afternoon watching college cheerleading squads perform. The performance took place on the campus of Southeast Missouri (SEMO) and might be fun. Mrs. Smith, our sponsor, gave us tickets for the event, so the three of us decided to make the trip.

After one honk, Betsy came bouncing out of her house to my car. She climbed in the back seat behind Cheryl.

“Hey girls,” she said with a bright smile, “Are we ready to roll?”

“It’s not noon yet,” Cheryl said, “So I ain’t rollin’ for nobody.”

“It’s close enough to noon for you to stop being grumpy,” I said, as I pulled out on the road and started us on our way.

“I like being grumpy on Saturday morning,” Cheryl said. “No self-respecting teenage girl should be up before noon on Saturday.”

“What about the guys?” Betsy asked.

“First of all, few teenage guys are worthy of any self-respect,” Cheryl replied. “Second, the ones who’re awake on Saturday morning are jackin’ off, and the ones who’re asleep are dreaming about jackin’ off.”

“Don’t you think you’re stretching it a little bit?” Betsy asked.

“No, but I’m sure they’re stretching it all the time,” Cheryl replied.

It was time to come to Betsy’s rescue. “You see, Betsy, Cheryl thinks all guys do is eat, sleep and sex. She has this warped view of guys in general, except for Scott, of course, who gets a free pass.”

“Now, girlfriend, that’s a very narrow view of what I think about guys,” Cheryl said in a mockingly serious tone. “Guys our age are at this transitional period in their life. They lack the capacity to control the radical hormonal changes goin’ on in their bodies.”

“Cheryl,” I said, exasperated, “What is this vain attempt at an unbiased scientific explanation about the biased prejudices you harbor against guys?”

“Now that was very unfair,” she claimed. “Here I try to provide Betsy with a perfectly sound reason why guys are such single-minded, lust-filled creatures. I think I’m bein’ very fair to the guys by acknowledging the fact that the desires that drive their lives are natural.”

“And, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your efforts,” Betsy said, “Even if I don’t happen to totally agree with your ideas.”

“I wasn’t seeking support from either of you for ideas that I know are universally true,” Cheryl retorted. “And as far as Krista’s earlier reference to Scott getting a pass, that is absolutely untrue. Just like all guys, Scott thinks usin’ his head correlates directly with unzipping his pants. Being older, his lustful energies are more refined, but they’re there.”

“Just out of curiosity, does Scott know about these deeply embedded ideas you have about guys, including him?” I asked.

“We don’t discuss it, if that’s what you mean,” Cheryl responded, a little defiant. “Some things a girl keeps to herself when it comes to a relationship.
