CHAPTER NINE

Two days later

Holding the unlit flashlight in her left hand, Wendy turned the doorknob and pushed the door open the smallest amount, praying it didn't squeak. Because that would be the icing on the cake, wouldn't it? Have the haunted house creaky door announce to the villains intrepid Nancy Drew was hot on their heels.

Fortunately, only silence greeted her and she swung the door open far enough to squeeze through. Outside the grounds were bathed in blackness, a small shaft of moonlight spearing across the damp grass. Already soaked with sweat from South Florida's infernal heat, she paused long enough to pull up the hood on her black sweatshirt and headed into the backstage area of the studio space. The actual baking part of the show was filmed outdoors, across the open parking lot separating the studio from the grassy area where the tents were set up. But tonight, she needed to be inside the actual studio.

She wasn't sure what she was looking for, but time was running out. Tomorrow was the final day of filming, and the grand champion would be crowned amidst a metric ton of publicity, including their family, friends, and as much of the public as they could safely squeeze into the park.

Tonight was her last chance to figure out who was sabotaging the show.

There were too many problems to chalk it up to coincidence. The first couple of contestants had been eliminated fairly—at least she thought so. She'd gotten suspicious when it came time for the third elimination.

Mary Beth mistaking salt for sugar could be overlooked as a careless error. Except Wendy remembered looking at the canisters on Mary Beth's station during their talk-to-the-contestant segment during filming, and they were clearly marked on the front with bold black letters on a white label. And the sizes of the canisters were distinctly different. The sugar was in a much bigger container than the salt. Any experienced baker would know the difference. And Mary Beth was an experienced baker. Wendy had figured her as a shoe-in for the finale.

Jerry's lavender and honey scones, though, had been a real shocker. Too much lavender added to a recipe and the end product ended up tasting like soap. She'd watched Jerry chop the lavender and add in what looked like the correct amount. She shuddered, remembering the taste of those scones. The lavender had been right at the edge of being too much. Coupled with the scorched bottoms from an overly hot oven, they'd had no choice but to eliminate him.

The temperature dial on the oven was set at the correct temperature, according to the electrical technician when Jerry had lodged a complaint, but with his signature item inedible, the judges had no choice but to eliminate him from the competition.

So they had two contestants expelled over technical errors which didn't make sense. One mistake she could buy. But at this level of competition, two was more than a coincidence.

The studio and the grounds were guarded by roaming security guards, keeping watch over the expensive state-of-the-art equipment.
