“I HAVEN’T BEEN OVER since you painted your place, Keeley.” Sugar Jones looked around the living room as she lounged on Keeley’s red-cushioned futon Tuesday night. “Who would think that purple walls would go so nicely with the red?”
Keeley looked up from the breakfast bar where she was arranging some ham mini-quiches and puff pastries stuffed with feta and spinach. “I painted it last Thanksgiving weekend. You really haven’t been over since then?”
“Nope.” Her friend shook her head, accepting a strawberry margarita fresh from the blender. “We’ve mostly seen each other at my loft or your office.”
Keeley went to the kitchen and carried the appetizer tray to her glass-topped chrome coffee table. “I’m sorry about that. I never realized I was becoming such a hermit.”
Sugar waved her apology away and snagged a quiche. “Don’t worry about it, Keel. I know you were superbusy with your business, and I had a pretty heavy course load this past semester anyway. Only one more semester to go for my MBA.”
“Good for you.” Keeley, better than anybody, knew how hard it was to work her way through school, especially dancing crazy hours late into the night.
“I’m going to start a consulting business focusing on the entertainment industry here in Chicago. Nightclubs, bars, even the strip clubs. Are you interested in more accounting clients? You’re about the only one I know who can make heads or tails out of some of those books.”
“Which set of books? The ones for the IRS or the real ones?” Keeley asked dryly, picking up a spinach puff.
Sugar laughed. “I take it you’ll pass. That’s okay. Once Binky starts recommending you to more of his buddies, you’ll have more business than you can handle. How’s it going, by the way?”
“It’s going okay. I’m making some progress but this really needs a team of auditors since there are at least three subjects to investigate. He’s paying me a bundle to look through all these invoices, bank statements and requisition requests, but I haven’t found anything conclusive yet.”
“Don’t worry about the money, honey. Binky told me he doesn’t care how much it costs to find the truth.”
Easy for Binky to say—he had plenty of dough. “The truth is, it could be almost anyone—Charlie, several upper-management guys, probably even some people I have no idea about.” Keeley bit into her puff and brushed pastry crumbs off her green Chicago University sweatshirt. As soon as she came home from work, she had taken off her uncomfortable clothes and immediately changed into sweats and fuzzy socks.
“Cherchez la femme, that’s what I always say,” Sugar stated.
“What?” Keeley had studied Spanish in school, not French.
“It means ‘Look for the woman.’ You and I both know we ladies are severely underestimated by the masculine sex.”
“Ya think? But I haven’t even found if thefts are occurring. It’s worse than looking for a needle in a haystack—there may be a needle, or there may not be, or the needle is in the haystack near the cow barn instead of in the field.
