WHAT’S FUNNY ABOUT BEING A WOMAN?

Well, nothing if you gauge it against all the obstacles and inequalities women are faced with every day. Fewer legal rights, forced marriages, and second-class social standing confront women from around the world. Even in so-called civilized modern societies, women earn less and have to put up with more in the workplace. Take a look at the number of females in the US Congress and you’d think the Nineteenth Amendment just passed a few years ago. Turn on the news and count the number of women commentators discussing the day’s political developments; apparently there just aren’t many women around who have an understanding of these things. There seems to be an endless supply of white guys in suits who do, though.

So is it any surprise that we women aren’t seen as having the same sense of humor as our male counterparts? We’re so busy dealing with this stuff that watching three guys bonking heads or nyuk, nyuk, nyuking just doesn’t appeal to us. We have more important issues to aim our pens at. Okay, I admit that after hanging around with my male colleagues for an extended period of time I do tend to crack up more easily at toilet humor. Must be a type of cartoonist Stockholm syndrome.
