The guys stick around the Red Ridge compound to help Dane and Crank, but they’re busy with club stuff, so I take up River and Quinn’s invite to go shopping.

“So… how did last night go?” I ask River the second we find a seat in the coffee shop.

A dreamy expression washes over her as she glances out of the window, no doubt searching for our chaperone.

“It was… amazing.” She leans in close. “He kissed me.”

“He did? Good for you, Riv. I’m so happy for you.”

“Oh, Sadie Ray, it was perfect. He took me up on the roof and… well, you know.”

“And there was just kissing?”

Her cheeks burn. “There might have been some groping, but we didn’t…”

I let out a little squeal of approval. “I knew Jax had it in him.”

“I like him so much.” Her expression drops. “But I know he’s worried about Rhett. Which is why you can’t say anything, not yet. It’s new and exciting, and I don’t want anything to ruin it.”

“I’m not sure hiding it is—”

“Please, Sadie. You can’t tell him. You know how he gets, and Jax looks up to him. If Rhett finds out and kicks off, Jax won’t choose me, he’ll choose the club.” She drops her gaze.

“Riv, look at me.” She lifts her head. “Don’t underestimate Jax. He’s a good guy. He would never hurt you like that.”

But as I say the words, I understand her concern. The club comes first, and he’s still only a prospect. If Rhett ordered him to leave River alone… I want to believe Jax would make the right choice, but she’s right.

Crap. Maybe I shouldn’t have pushed this without talking to Rhett first.

“You won’t tell him?”

“No, but you’re going to have to tell him eventually.”

“I will, I promise. We just want some time to explore things before everyone finds out.”

Quinn and Kat return with our order, and I take my caramel latte.

“Thanks,” I say.

“Thanks for letting me gate-crash,” Kat replies, sliding into her seat. “It’s nice to have girls to hang out with.”

“You don’t have friends at school?” Quinn asks.

“Some.” She shrugs. “But it’s not exactly easy being the sister of a Reaper. Shit, sorry, I mean Sinner. Still getting used to the change.”

“It’s all good.” I offer her a warm smile. “And I know exactly what you mean. It’s easier to keep people at arm’s length than hope they’ll understand club life.”

Kat nods, running her thumbs around the rim of her mug. “There’s a few other club kids, but I’ve never really bonded with them.”

“Well, now you have us,” River says, as if it’s the simplest thing in the world.

“Thanks, I’d like that.”

The girls launch into a rundown of the party last night, and Kat gets us up to speed on who’s who over at Red Ridge. When she mentions Crank, I don’t miss the way Quinn stiffens.

“Something you want to tell us?” I ask her.

“Nope.” She casts me a dismissive look, and I chuckle.

“You know, in my experience, bikers can be pretty determined when it comes to what they want.
