Chapter Thirteen

Lucky was floating on cloud nine. While the way it happened was unexpected, he’d daydreamed about that moment more than he’d admit to anyone. He certainly hadn’t expected to feel the way he was feeling now—so sure of his feelings, so sure of Aaron. Maybe it wasn’t such a big deal that he and Aaron would be off to different colleges in a matter of weeks. They loved each other, they could try to make it work, couldn’t they? Other people had long distance relationships. Hell, Bud was gay and still managed to make it work long distance with his wife.

Lucky let his feelings drown out his nagging doubt. He wanted to replay every moment. He wanted so much to draw what had occurred that his skin itched with the urge. The need to capture every moment was all-encompassing.

His phone buzzed with an incoming text as he let himself into the trailer. It was a text from Aaron.

I told Lyn about us.

Lucky smiled so wide he his face nearly cracked. He wasn’t a secret anymore. Even more reason to think that they had the beginnings of something great and could make it work.

And?

He got out his pencils and paper while waiting for Aaron’s reply, then sat cross-legged on his bed with his sketchpad in his lap and his phone next to him.

She’s freaking out.

She keeps smacking me for not telling her sooner

I think she left a bruise

She says if you hurt me she’s going to hunt you down

Lucky laughed and shook his head. Lyn was something else; he knew that despite the little time they’d spent together.

Duly noted.

I’ll kiss any bruises better…

A moment passed without a reply from Aaron, and Lucky picked up his pencil, pressing the tip lightly onto the paper, beginning to sketch the way Aaron had looked last night, lying in his arms. He hoped he could do it justice. He needed desperately to get the pictures in his mind down before they faded, though he wasn’t sure he’d forget the way Aaron had looked lost in ecstasy any time soon. Maybe he’d gone too far in his text to Aaron; it took him a little while to answer, but soon his phone indicated a new message.

When can I see you again?

Lucky gave a happy sigh at that text and typed a quick reply. He couldn’t wait to see Aaron again.

Aaron had been silly not telling Lyn about Lucky sooner. Yeah, he had to put up with her giving him all kinds of crap and teasing him mercilessly, but he finally had someone to discuss things with, someone who could tell him if he was crazy for feeling what he was feeling and so soon, someone to tell him if he was deluding himself by staying in this relationship with Lucky. They’d already discussed more than Aaron had imagined telling her, but that’s what he loved about Lyn, that he could tell her anything.

Going on and on about a boy to her, giggling like mad and smiling so much his face hurt—these were all things he’d dreamed about growing up.
