Summary

* * *

In this chapter we have undertaken a short exploration of the philosophy of research. In particular we highlighted ontology – the study of being, epistemology – what is knowledge and methodology – how do we know? Within each term we explored a range of different ways of answering each question and also looked at a range of methods, including quantitative, qualitative and mixed method approaches. We were able to demonstrate that although it is possible to argue for service user involvement in all the different ways of developing knowledge claims there are some which promised a more active involvement and will resonate more closely with service user aspirations than others. However, there is no philosophical reason why service users should be refused access to knowledge creation although there will be limits to what they can do (as there would be for any professional researcher). These limits will be partly to do with the vision of research commissioners, the levels of research skills and the nature of the problem to be researched. Like any other researcher, service user researchers will be able to develop more or less accurate knowledge claims.
