CHAPTER TWELVE

“Blake, I’m sorry, I can’t really—” Sam started to say when he picked up, but Blake cut in quickly.

“There are people outside my house,” he gritted out, moving away from the window and pacing his kitchen.

“What?”

Blake run a hand through his head and took a deep breath. “Three guys with the biggest cameras I’ve ever seen are camping on the other side of the street. One is basically on my driveway.”

“Shit. Shit.” Sam whispered something to someone on his end and there was a sound of door closing. “Blake, I’m sorry.”

“What’s going on?” Blake tightened the grip on his phone.

Sam sighed. “They had to see us together somewhere.”

“And? You’re not the one running, Galloway is.” This is not happening.

“Yes. But the Democratic race is pretty much over and there’s only so much they can write and say about her.”

“So now they moved on to her staff,” Blake finished for him. Great. He paused and rested his hand on the nape of his neck. Fuck.

“Yes,” Sam said quietly. “I’m sorry, I really am.”

“Yeah, well.” He didn’t want to fight with Sam, not really, but Sam was the closest target he had. Blake wasn’t going to pretend he was happy about the situation.

There was a long silence on the other side of the line. “Blake, I haven’t told the press about us. I wouldn’t. We talked about it, you know I don’t share my personal life with them.” Sam paused. “I’ve never hidden anything and I did speak up for some of the issues in the past, but not since the start of the campaign.”

Blake knew that. He hadn’t really thought Sam was the one who gave them the information. He just wished…

“Blake?”

He realized he hadn’t said any of that out loud. “I know you didn’t. It’s not that. It’s just… They’re here.” It didn’t really matter to him how they got there.

“I’m sorry,” Sam repeated and Blake closed his eyes. His shoulders slumped.

“Tell me what to do to make them go away. Can I call the cops?” He didn’t really have a contingency plan for the paparazzi showing up on his doorsteps. He had never planned to become a fucking celebrity.

Sam sighed. “Unless they’re trespassing, no, not really. To be honest, the best strategy is to just ignore them. They will go away when they get another story.”

“When?” Blake asked, pouring himself more coffee. “I have to think about Olivia, Sam. I don’t want her pictures to show up in some trashy magazines or on the evening news.”

“I will talk with Linda, she will know what to do. She can make them blur her face, at the least—“

“For fuck’s sake.” Blake wanted to break something. Like an expensive camera, for example.

“I—It will blow over in a day or two. Just don’t say anything to them, other than ‘No comment,’ if necessary.” Sam’s voice usually calmed him down, but it didn’t work this time. Blake breathed in and out. “I’m refusing to answer any personal questions. They will move on.”

Blake wondered if Sam believed in what he was saying.
