"Good morning," Alicia greeted the saleswoman the following Monday morning as she pushed open the glass door and entered Glad Rags.
"Alicia! Hi. Have you heard the news since you got back?"
"I guess not. What news?"
"Gwen had her baby last night."
"Oh?" Alicia walked to the back of the shop, her footsteps soundless on the lush baby blue carpet. She hung her purse and jacket in the crowded employees' closet. The saleswoman followed her.
"It was almost a month early, but weighed over six pounds. A little girl."
"How wonderful. How's Gwen?"
"Fine. Came through it like a charm."
"Good. I need to call her about the work that was done on her cabin."
"Can I get you some coffee?"
Alicia looked at her quizzically. "Awfully solicitous, aren't you? Is there something you're not telling me? Have I been fired in my absence?"
"Hardly." The woman lowered her voice. "The powers-that-be are in a meeting and asked me to send you in when you arrived. I think they want your decision today, Alicia."
"Hmm." Alicia accepted the coffee and took a sip. She hadn't expected it to come so soon, but she knew now what her answer would be. "Well, to the trenches."
She winked at her cohort, checked out her appearance in the hall mirror, and took the stairs to the chain's executive offices on the second floor.
"Hello, Alicia, they're expecting you. Go right in," the owners' secretary said with all the cordiality of an undertaker.
"Thank you."
Summoning all her poise, Alicia opened the heavy oak door and entered the inner sanctum. She was greeted by a cloud of cigar smoke and hearty hellos.
After being politely seated, offered coffee, and queried about her week of vacation, they put the important question to her.
She had almost blown it again. She had almost let herself slip into that old habit of dependency on someone else for her happiness. She had two wonderful sons, two healthy legs to stand on, a keen mind, and creative ideas. After several hours of hard weeping, more hours of cursing and stomping, and two days of soul-searching, she had decided she didn't need Pierce Reynolds. She didn't need anything except her own ingenuity.
"My time and talents are expensive," she told them bluntly. "I want five hundred dollars a month more than you offered."
They conferred and met her terms.
"Well, sirs, you have yourself a new Fashion Coordinator. Shall I outline some of my ideas?"
Her smiling enthusiasm captivated them.
