Chapter Twelve

“Fuck, fuck, fuck.” Emery kicked the door shut behind her.

“Well, I’m glad you said it, or I was going to have to.” Theo pounced. “No, actually, I still have to say it ‘what the fuck?’”

“I don’t know.”

“So much for taking things slow and practicing discretion.”

“I know.” She fell into her desk chair and then hopped up again quickly. She had too much energy to collapse, even if part of her ached to do so. “For what it’s worth, I didn’t plan any of this.”

“No. You never do, and that’s what’s so maddening.” He’d been waiting for her at the office, and seeing it was a Sunday afternoon, they both made use of having the place to themselves by shouting out their frustration. They weren’t really yelling at each other, or at least she wasn’t yelling at him, but it felt good to vent.

“Believe it or not, she’s the one who came on to me.”

“I do not,” he said frankly. “It doesn’t track. She ended your last date in a free fall. I don’t think the leap from Victorian fainting couch to ravenous sex kitten in two weeks is plausible. I mean, you’re good with women, but not that good.”

“It didn’t work like that. I wasn’t trying to be sexy at all. The day was decidedly bland in so many ways. No fast cars, no fancy meals, no wine, no dancing, there wasn’t even any sexy banter.”

“Maybe you didn’t notice your own sexy banter. Sometimes it just rolls out of you.”

She paused to check her memories. They’d been playful, and maybe even a bit teasing a time or two, but she hadn’t played on innuendo or thinly veiled come-ons. “I think we just talked to each other.”

“No, you and I talk to each other. With women, you flirt.”

“I talked to her, Theo, really talked to her, about interests and books and snippets of our childhoods, and even our insecurities.”

“You mean her insecurities since you don’t have any, or at least not any you’d admit to.”

She pursed her lips and looked away.

“Wait, what insecurities did you tell her about that you haven’t told me about?”

“It doesn’t matter.” She started to pace. “The point is the date went really well, and it turned into a night that was unexpectedly amazing, all at her request.”

“At her request? What, did she send you a monogrammed invitation to skip dinner and go right to eating her—”

“Hey,” she snapped, surprising both of them.

He stared at her for a second as if waiting for some sort of explanation.

“It wasn’t like that. We were having a good time. She said she wanted to stay. I asked if she wanted to grab dinner, and she said she’d rather stay all night.”

He stared at her for a moment as if waiting for her to crack a joke or at least a smile, and when she didn’t, he couldn’t seem to figure out what to say. “I’m stuck. I’m trying to take what you’re saying at face value, but you know no one else in town is going to believe that Arden jumped you and not the other way around.
