Pacing from one end of the chamber to the other was not helping Chardon calm his nerves while he contemplated a strategy for Earth. When both forces pulled out, there was an unspoken promise that they would not return anytime soon. Reopening the pathway meant opening old wounds. He found himself chewing on his lower lip and winced when his teeth sunk in hard, drawing blood.

“Don’t do that,” Halfar’s voice chided as he stepped in front of Chardon and licked the smeared blood from his lip. “I’m the only one allowed to hurt you like that.”

“Stop,” Chardon pushed him away. “I’m being serious.”

“So am I,” Halfar replied.

“We can’t let Earth get sucked into this battle.”

“Agreed. But, if our enemy thinks it can tilt the scales they will use it against us.”

“There has to be a better alternative,” Chardon started chewing his lip again then stopped when Halfar gave him a warning look.

“If there was a way to turn our prisoner into an ally,” Halfar thought out loud, stroking his chin.

“You can’t be serious?”

“Remember that saying humans had? Keep your friends close.”

“And your enemies closer,” Chardon finished the line.

“My race has fought the Razznians on several occasions, but nothing too serious. Trade wars mostly. For their ruler to believe we can be taken down so easily tells me how masterful Sestis’ manipulations were.”

Chardon felt a tinge of pity for the enemy in that moment. They did not deserve to be wiped out. On the other hand, he was not going to let his race be conquered. His pacing ceased, and he made a decision.

“I will interrogate the leader and see how far I get.”

“Very well. Just remember,” Halfar caressed Chardon’s cheek with a taloned finger, “he is the enemy and will do anything for his race, even if it means death.”
