Chapter Eleven

“Please sit down, Pop,” Kaden said, after they all came in and warmed themselves.

Martha walked in from the kitchen and placed her hand on his shoulder. “Listen to him, Don.”

He stopped pacing and stared at her for twenty seconds. She never faltered in her resolve, and finally he perched on the couch. Kaden raised an eyebrow at Rhett, who shrugged. “This is ridiculous. She’s a grown woman,” Don said. He glanced up at Martha. “Why are you carrying that cat?”

“Because she’s the most precious thing in the world.” Martha’s voice took on the high-pitched sound again. “Here, try it.” She plopped Lassie into his lap.

“What’s to try? It’s a cat.”

Martha guided Don’s hand across Lassie’s back. “It’s calming.”

Don petted her and smiled at Martha. His eyes sparkled as they met with hers.

How does Rhett not see what’s going on there? Kaden thought.

“Isn’t that better than your cigarettes?” Martha asked.

“No,” Don replied gruffly, massaging the cat’s fur. “But it is nice.”

“Should I set a place at the lunch table for Elise?”

“How should I know? If she comes in, she can eat. We aren’t holding meals for her. She isn’t a teenager anymore, even if she chooses to act like one.”

Martha nodded and left the room.

“Do either of you know what they’re doing here?” Don asked Kaden and Rhett.

Rhett lifted his one shoulder in a half-shrug. “I assume she’s worried about you.”

“She can clearly see I’m fine.” He directed himself to Kaden, “And you can tell her the same. Then she can go and take her worthless husband with her.”

Rhett blinked at him. “Did something happen, Pop?”

“What do mean?”

“Between you and Mom. Things seem tenser than the last time you were together,” Rhett explained.

“Things are always tense when she insists on bringing scum onto my property,” Don said. He watched as Lassie jumped down and stretched. “What’s she doing?”

Kaden clicked his tongue and pointed to the bathroom, where the cat ran. “Searching for her litter box.”

Don offered a curt nod and regarded Rhett. “I told you when we sat down to discuss inheritance and co-ownership that your mother wouldn’t be happy. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is her way of acting out.”

Acting out? Kaden couldn’t get over the language Don used to describe his daughter, but it was accurate.

“You don’t have to deal with her tantrums until your health is restored,” Rhett told him. “I’ve got the business taken care of, and you can teach me more as it’s needed.”

“Is she going to stop?” Kaden asked.

“I wouldn’t count on it. Elise has never gotten over the fact that she was cut off.” Don smiled at Lassie’s emergence and amusement with a light stream. “You know your mother, Everett, the worst she’ll do is put on an empty show.”

Rhett exchanged a look with Kaden. “Pop, she has some friends who—” The front door slamming interrupted Rhett.

Elise ran in the room and knelt at Don’s feet. “Daddy, are you okay?”

“What is the matter with you?”

“Nothing. I’m not the one who had a stroke.
