Chapter 11

Haley stared at her reflection in the bedroom mirror of her hotel suite, loved what she saw and fluffed the curls tumbling around her face. Puckering her lips, she applied a second coat of red lipstick, then a spritz of perfume. She’d selected a white BCBG dress with a sweetheart neckline for her date with Ashton. Her look was sexy, but sophisticated, and she liked how the short, designer dress hugged her body in all the right places.

Sliding gold bangles onto her wrist, Haley noticed a faint bruise on her right arm and touched it with her thumb. Did that really happen? Did some crook actually try to mug her today? Haley covered the mark with a dab of concealer, then washed her hands. On the drive back to the hotel, she’d replayed the attack in her mind, and although she’d felt like crying she’d conquered her emotions and chatted with Ashton about his afternoon at the business summit. His speech was a hit, and they were going to celebrate at dinner.

Hearing a knock on the door, Haley turned off the bathroom light and rushed down the hallway, anxious to see Ashton. Scented candles cast a soft glow around the room and a tantalizing aroma from the suite’s kitchen, courtesy of room service, inundated the air. Outside, the wind howled, and rain beat against the windows, but the suite was warm and cozy and the samba song playing on the stereo system made Haley feel like dancing. It had been pouring since they’d returned to the hotel an hour earlier, and although Ashton told her the weather conditions would improve, Haley didn’t want to go out on the town. She wanted to spend a quiet evening in her suite with Ashton, not dining at an upscale restaurant, with his bodyguard and personal driver nearby.

Haley opened the front door, saw Ashton standing in the hallway in a black tailored suit, crisp white dress shirt and leather shoes, and moaned inwardly. Worried her knees would give way, Haley leaned against the door to support her weight. What is the matter with me? she thought, her gaze sliding down his toned physique. Why am I panting? Haley had to remind herself to breathe, and when Ashton bent down and kissed her cheek, desire engulfed her body. He complimented her outfit, telling her how pretty she looked, but her head was spinning so fast Haley couldn’t respond.

“Are you ready to go? Reynaldo and Juan are holding the elevator for us.”

“I was hoping we could stay in tonight.”

An amused expression warmed his face. “It’s going to stop raining, don’t worry.”

“I have a surprise for you.” Haley took his hand, closed the door with her hips, and led him inside the suite. “Look, I ordered room service. Dinner’s on me.”

“Haley, that was very kind of you, but I insist on paying you back.”

“Why? I work, and I enjoy spoiling the people I care about.”

Ashton retrieved his wallet from his suit jacket, took out several hundred dollar bills and put them on the desk.
