Chapter 13
Sutton
I stayed in my room for a long time, trying to decide how to tell Damon. I felt like the world had come crashing down all over again, even though this really didn’t have anything to do with me. Damon wanted to know what happened to his mother, and, well, it wasn’t good news.
To some, it would be pretty simple. But I knew this was bigger than that. Damon had been through a lot, and hearing the things he said about his mother, how he missed her and wished he could have her in his life, well, I knew this was going to be tough.
“We’re going out to dinner to celebrate! Do either of you want to join?” Susan’s voice floated up from the first floor. I rolled my eyes. For the moment, I’d forgotten that Dean was moving in. Celebrating was the last thing I wanted to be doing.
“I’m not hungry!” I called back.
“Me neither!” Damon shouted from his room.
“All right, we’ll bring you both something. You might be hungry later,” Susan yelled up the stairs. Damon answered her, but I didn’t bother. I didn’t care if they brought anything or not. I felt sick.
After they left, I took a few deep breaths. I had to talk to Damon, and now would be the best time. I knew we’d be able to truly talk without being interrupted, and that’s what news like this needed.
Heading to his room, I knocked on the open door as I stepped inside.
“You got a minute?” I asked.
“You find something?” he replied.
I nodded, unable to speak. He must have been able to see the emotion in my features. He dropped the pen and turned to me. “Well?”
“I’m so sorry,” I said at last. “Your mom, she”-
I’d never been very good at sharing difficult news, and this proved to be the same as every other time in my life I’d had to do so. But, there was something even worse about this time. Perhaps it was how I felt about Damon. Perhaps it was because I had been through a lot myself. But, the facts came spilling out through my cracked tone, and when I was done, I merely waited.
As I suspected, Damon didn’t take the news well. He seemed really emotional at first, then angry, then emotional again.
“I’ve got to go,” he said.
“Where?” I asked.
“I don’t know. I don’t care,” he rose from the desk and grabbed his helmet. But, I couldn’t let him leave with the news he’d just gotten. He couldn’t drive, and I didn’t know what he’d do. He was clearly distraught, and this was shocking.
“Please don’t go,” I said. “Please.”
“I can’t be here right now. I need to be alone,” he snapped.
“I know how you feel. My parents are dead, remember?” I begged. I grabbed his arm on his way by, and he looked at me. There was a different look in his eyes, and I knew somehow my words sank in.
He shook his head, but there was no hiding the emotion in his eyes.
