Chapter 12

Stunned, Avery ground to a halt in the middle of the street. “You’re going to what?”

He shrugged. Shrugged. “That was always the plan.”

Talk about digging himself into a deeper hole. If that was the plan, then how dare he drop that on her at the eleventh hour. “You should’ve told me.”

“It doesn’t change anything.”

“Like hell it doesn’t.”

“We need to get in the building. It’s not safe out here.” It took a tug on her arm to convince her legs to work.

Mechanically, she let him drag her the rest of the way across the street. He was going to quit ICE today. There had to be a good reason, some piece of the puzzle she was missing. Some reasonable excuse why he didn’t tell her sooner.

There were two ways to get into the parking garage on foot—go through the main door of the building, then take the interior stairs down, or take the exterior stairs adjacent to the barred entrance gate of the garage. Either way required a swipe of a key card, and though Avery wasn’t aware of any kind of in-house monitoring program or app to track who entered and left the building, it was quite possible that such a thing existed, which would completely remove their element of surprise.

Ryan beelined for the external stairs and swiped his key card. Avery stood next to him, fingering the gadget watch. “What about our partnership?”

He looked her way as he pushed the door open. “I told you—nothing’s changed. What I have to do—take care of Chiara, protect you—I can’t be locked in to following the rules of the job.”

She followed him down the stairs and into the cavernous garage. What he said made sense except... “How are you going to arrest Chiara if you don’t work for ICE?”

He stopped at the base of the stairs and, after giving the area a sweeping three-sixty scan, shot Avery a hard, all-business look that said, You know the answer to that.

Her heart sank. She did know the answer. He wasn’t going to arrest Chiara. He was going to kill him. She focused on a patch of blacktop and let her vision fuzz, breathing and thinking. Wow. That made sense.

That made a lot of sense. Whatever supersecret spy organization Ryan actually belonged to, there’s no way they’d put a lethal, highly trained former soldier like Ryan—with an entire arsenal of weapons at his disposal—on the hunt for one of the most wanted men in the world so Chiara could have a fair trial. That wasn’t how covert ops worked. Not in movies, not in books and, so it seemed, not in real life.

“Are you okay?”

She shook herself out of her trance. “Yes.” It was true. She was surprisingly at peace with the idea of the world being rid of one of its worst, most vile people. She braced herself for the usual wave of guilt about her unpacifistic opinion, but it didn’t come, which she was going to consider progress.

There were more vehicles parked there than Avery expected.
