Chapter Six

Crain held up two shirts and turned to his brother where Richard sat on the bed. “Which one? The green polo or the blue button-down?”

His eyes narrowed, Richard nodded toward the green polo. “Are you sure about this?” he asked.

Crain knew he wasn’t referring to the shirt choice.

He shrugged. “He’s my mate. I gotta at least try, right?”

“Then why don’t we all go out for supper? You know, you and him, me, and I’m sure we could get Vail and Draven to go.”

After adjusting the collar, Crain turned and frowned at his brother. He settled his arms on his hips and shook his head. “Is that so you can grill him all evening? Or maybe you just plan to scowl at him the whole time?” he stated dryly.

Richard glared and stood.

“There,” Crain said, pointing at him. “Just like that.”

Huffing, Richard crossed to the window and stared out the window for several seconds. Then he whirled around and threw up his hands. “Damn it, Crain. I just want to protect you. I don’t want to see you hurt again. How do you know you can trust this guy?”

Crain smiled. He knew his brother felt guilty about not keeping him safe, first from the alpha, then from the scientists. He didn’t need Richard to come out and say it. He closed the distance between them and gave him a quick hug, keeping it brief.

Stepping back, Crain gave him a beseeching look. “I know you want to protect me. I’m grateful for everything you’ve done for me. I hate you had to give up your position in our pack for me. But, please, try to understand that Aaric is my mate. He might have been a douche about it at first, but considering what he went through, well, I’m willing to give it another go.”

“And the way you smelled after leaving the billiard room wouldn’t have anything to do with it, huh?” Richard asked, wryly.

Crain couldn’t help but flush as he muttered, “Yeah, well, when you meet your mate, you’ll understand.”

Richard sighed. His jaw tightened once, then nodded. He gave Crain a strained smile. “Just be careful.”

Damn, he hadn’t meant to rub in the fact that Richard was older and still hadn’t met the one Fate intended for him. “Hey,” Crain murmured. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to—”

“Hey, forget it.” Richard shrugged. “If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t...” He gave another shrug, like it didn’t matter to him either way.

Crain knew he wouldn’t get another thing out of Richard. “Right, well.” He cleared his throat. “He’s supposed to be here any minute. Think he’s a punctual guy?”

Before his brother could answer, a knock sounded on his door, followed by Land, Payson’s mate, poking his head into the room. “Hey, your date’s here.” The slender blond grinned while whistling. “Very nice, even when your ass ain’t hangin’ out.”

Laughing, Crain grabbed his coat. “Uh, thanks…I think.” Shifters weren’t shy by nature…hard to be when you had to get naked every time you shifted, but he hadn’t been all too certain the jock had been the thing to wear under the chaps.
