I find Becky by the lockers, wrestling with the landslide of Honey Badger leaflets she just knocked over with her History books. I nab one for research purposes.

“You don’t mind skipping tonight, do you? I’m seeing you tomorrow anyway,” I say. “I need to work on my arguments for the debate.”

“Oh.” Which is all Becky needs to say for me to know that she does mind.

I’m ready for this.

“It’s just, after the mess I made of the hustings, I’m hoping to claw back a bit of dignity.”

Becky nods, busy growling at the contents of her locker.

“Hey, Stickland.” Nick passes by. “Catch you later.”

I permit myself one extra second of watching Nick walk away before I turn to Becky, who’s giving me an odd look.

“So it’s the sort of debate prep you can do with Nick Pallis, but not with me?”

“Well, yeah, he’s my campaign manager, you’re …”

“The leader of the opposition, I know.” Becky goes quiet a moment, digging about in her locker even though she’s got the leaflets under control. Then she sighs and gives me a tired smile. “I’m also your best mate. You could have just said you wanted some alone time with Nick.”
